Next Assam Legislative Assembly Election
Legislative Assembly elections will be held in Assam in month of March to April 2026 to elect 126 members of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The term of current assembly elected in 2021 will expire on May 2, 2026. Himanta Biswa Sharma currently plans to continue in his role as chief minister for the elections. Background In the previous assembly elections, the incumbent BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retaining power with 75 seats, which marks the first time a non-INC alliance winning consecutive terms in the state. The ''Mahajot'' led by INC won 50 seats, increasing its tally from 26 in 2016. After the victory, Himanta Biswa Sharma became the next chief minister of the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma (born 1 February 1969) is an Indian politician serving as the 15th and incumbent Chief Minister of Assam. A former member of the Indian National Congress political party. Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected in 2001. Sarma studied at Cotton College and later obtained a bachelor of laws from Government Law College in Guwahati. He later became a solicitor and practised law at Gauhati High Court before his entry to politics. Sarma was the Congress candidate for Jalukbari in 2001 and he defeated AGP leader Bhrigu Phukan. He was made a minister of state in the First Tarun Gogoi cabinet twice. He was inducted into the Second Tarun Gogoi cabinet and was upgraded to a cabinet minister. All India United Democratic Front
The All India United Democratic Front (also known as AIUDF and ''Sarva Bharatiya Sanyukt Ganatantric Morcha'') is a political party active in the Indian state of Assam. It is the 3rd largest political party in Assam Legislative Assembly after BJP and Indian National Congress, INC. The party was founded by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on 3 October 2005 and at that time, its name was Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF). It was relaunched as a national party under its current name at a press meet in New Delhi on 2 February 2009, again with the Badruddin Ajmal as the party's leader. The party is headquartered in Guwahati. The AIUDF is a key opposition party in Assam, which is the voice of millions of Bengali Muslims from Lower Assam and Barak Valley. Atul Bora is an Indian politician from Assam belonging to a regional party, Asom Gana Parishad. In July 2014 he was elected president of the party. Asom Gana Parishad
Asom Gana Parishad (translation: ''Assam People's Council'', AGP) is a state political party in Assam, India. The AGP was formed after the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13–14 October 1985 in Golaghat, that let Prafulla Kumar Mahanta to be elected as the youngest chief minister of the state. The AGP has formed government twice from 1985 to 1989 and from 1996 to 2001. The party split in 2005, with former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta forming the Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive), but regrouped on 14 October 2008 in Golaghat.
