Newport Dodgers
The Newport Dodgers were a Northeast Arkansas League baseball team based in Newport, Arkansas, USA that played from 1936 to 1941. They were affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1936 to 1937, the Detroit Tigers in 1939 and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940–1941. They played their home games at Mann Field. The Newport Pearl Diggers began Northeast Arkansas League play in 1909. Merle Settlemire
Edgar Merle Settlemire (January 19, 1903 – June 12, 1988) was an American professional baseball player, manager and scout. A left-handed pitcher, he appeared in 30 games in Major League Baseball for the 1928 Boston Red Sox. He was listed as tall and . Settlemire was born in Santa Fe, Ohio. His professional career began in 1924 and continued for 17 seasons over 21 years, through 1944. In his only year in the major leagues, , he dropped all six of his decisions for a 57–96–1 Red Sox team that finished eighth and last in the American League, 43 games behind the World Series champion New York Yankees. Of his 30 appearances, nine were starts. He allowed 116 hits, 50 earned runs and 34 bases on balls in 82 innings pitched, with only 12 strikeouts. Paul Chervinko
Paul Chervinko (July 23, 1910 – June 3, 1976) was a Major League Baseball catcher for parts of two seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1937–1938). He was a native of Trauger, Pennsylvania. Chervinko was an excellent defensive player who just couldn't hit well enough to stay in the big leagues. Behind the plate he made only one error in 102 chances for a fielding percentage of .990. At bat, however, he was just 11-for-75 (.147) with five runs batted in and one run scored in 42 total games. During his time with Brooklyn he was surrounded by some quite notable people. His manager was Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes, and some of his teammates were future Hall of Famers as well: outfielder Heinie Manush, pitcher Waite Hoyt, and shortstop Leo Durocher. Johnny Sain
John Franklin "Johnny" Sain (September 25, 1917 – November 7, 2006) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who was best known for teaming with left-hander Warren Spahn on the Boston Braves teams from 1946 to 1951. He was the runner-up for the National League's Most Valuable Player Award in the Braves' pennant-winning season of 1948, after leading the National League in wins, complete games and innings pitched. He later became further well known as one of the top pitching coaches in the majors. Military service Beginning in late 1942, Sain served in the United States Navy during World War II. As a navy pilot, he spent the next three years stateside, while also playing baseball on the navy bases. He was discharged in November 1945. Pete Reiser
Harold Patrick Reiser (March 17, 1919 – October 25, 1981), nicknamed "Pistol Pete", was an American professional baseball outfielder and coach, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB), during the 1940s and early 1950s. While known primarily for his time with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Reiser later played for the Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Indians. Early career A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Reiser originally signed with his hometown Cardinals, but at age 19 he was among a group of minor league players declared free agents by Commissioner of Baseball Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Reportedly, Cardinal general manager Branch Rickey—mortified at losing a player of Reiser's caliber—arranged for the Dodgers to sign Reiser, hide him in the minors, then trade him back to St. Louis at a later date.
