Newman College, Thodupuzha
Newman College is a Syro Malabar Catholic institution of higher education in Thodupuzha, Kerala, India, administered by the Diocese of Kothamangalam. It is a leading college in the Idukki District, with over 2000 students, 66 teaching staff, and 36 non-teaching staff. The college ranked 78 in All India Ranking published by National Institutional Ranking Framework during 2019. It is named after St. John Henry Newman. Controversies The college is best known internationally for an incident in 2010. On 4 July 2010 Professor T J Joseph was attacked and had his arm severed by Islamic radicals claiming that a punctuation exercise he had set in an examination was insulting to Islam. Though the college raised 600,000 rupees for his medical care, he was on 4 September dismissed from the college's employment on the grounds that he had "hurt the feelings of a community" and caused a "loss of goodwill to the Church". Kottayam () is a municipal town in the Indian state of Kerala. Flanked by the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west. It is the district headquarters of Kottayam district, located in south-west Kerala. Thodupuzha (തൊടുപുഴ) is a municipal town located in Idukki district, Kerala, India, that covers an area of . It lies on the banks of Thodupuzha river, which merges with the Kaliyar and Kothamangalam rivers at Muvattupuzha to form the Muvattupuzha river. Thodupuzha is from Kottayam, from Kattappana and south east of Kochi. Thodupuzha is from the state capital, Trivandrum. The geographical classification of the Thodupuzha Region is ''Malanad'' or ''Keezhmalanad.'' Thodupuzha is the largest town in Idukki district and is a main commercial center. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Kothamangalam is an East Syriac Catholic eparchy in India, under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. It was established by Pope Pius XII in 1957. National Institutional Ranking Framework
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education (India), Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The Framework was approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 September 2015. Depending on their areas of operation, institutions have been ranked under 11 different categories – overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research. The Framework uses several parameters for ranking purposes like resources, research, and stakeholder perception. These parameters have been grouped into five clusters and these clusters were assigned certain weightages. The weightages depend on the type of institution.
