Newlyn School
The Newlyn School was an art colony of artists based in or near Newlyn, a fishing village adjacent to Penzance, on the south coast of Cornwall, from the 1880s until the early twentieth century. The establishment of the Newlyn School was reminiscent of the Barbizon School in France, where artists fled Paris to paint in a more pure setting emphasising natural light. These schools along with a related California movement were also known as En plein air. Some of the first British artists to settle in the area had already travelled in Brittany, but found in Newlyn a comparable English environment with a number of things guaranteed to attract them: fantastic light, cheap living, and the availability of inexpensive models. The artists were fascinated by the fishermen's working life at sea and the everyday life in the harbour and nearby villages. Thomas Cooper Gotch
Thomas Cooper Gotch or T. C. Gotch (1854–1931) was an English painter and book illustrator loosely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement; he was the brother of John Alfred Gotch, the architect. Gotch studied art in London and Antwerp before he married and studied in Paris with his wife, Caroline, a fellow artist. Returning to Britain, they settled into the Newlyn art colony in Cornwall. He first made paintings of natural, pastoral settings before immersing himself in the romantic, Pre-Raphaelite romantic style for which he is best known. His daughter was often a model for the colourful depictions of young girls. His works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal College of Art and the Paris Salon. Charles Walter Simpson (English Artist)
Charles Walter Simpson Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, RI (8 May 1885 – 3 October 1971) was an English painter. He was born in Camberley, Surrey, England. Simpson lived in Lamorna, Cornwall, in the early 1910s, and returned there in the 1930s, earning a reputation as an animal and bird painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1948, and his work was part of the art competitions at four Olympic Games. An exhibition of his work was held at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in 2005. Dod Procter
Dod Procter, born Doris Margaret Shaw, (1890–1972) was an English artist, and the wife of the artist Ernest Procter. Her painting ''Morning'' was bought for the public by the ''Daily Mail'' in 1927. Procter and her husband attended art schools in England and in Paris together, where they were both influenced by Impressionism and the Post-Impressionism movements. They also worked together at times, sometimes sharing commissions and other times showing their work together in exhibitions. Procter was a lifelong artist, active after the untimely death of her husband in 1935. After Ernest's death, Procter travelled to the United States, Canada, Jamaica and Africa. She died in 1972 and is buried next to her husband at St Hilary Church, Cornwall. She was a member of several artists organisations, such as the Newlyn School and became President of St Ives Society of Artists (STISA) in 1966. Alfred Munnings
Sir Alfred James Munnings, (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War Memorials Fund, he earned several prestigious commissions after the Great War that made him wealthy. Between 1912 and 1914 he was a member of the Newlyn School of artists. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics, the 1932 Summer Olympics, and the 1948 Summer Olympics. Munnings was president of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1944 until his death. Dame Laura Knight ( Johnson; 4 August 1877 – 7 July 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. Harold Knight
Harold Knight (27 January 1874 – 3 October 1961) was an English portrait, genre and landscape painter. Knight was born in Nottingham, England, the son of William Knight (architect), William Knight, architect, and studied at Nottingham School of Art under Wilson Foster. Nottingham had a reputation as among the best of the English provincial art schools and Knight won a series of prizes there, most notably for a series of oil studies of nudes. At the time he was considered to be the best student in the college. At the School of Art he met fellow artist Laura Johnson, whom he married in 1903. As Laura Knight, she became well known for her paintings of scenes from the ballet, circus and similar events. Mary Jewels
Mary Jewels (5 February 1886–1977) was a British painter, born in Newlyn in Cornwall. Jewels never had any formal training and painted in a naïve style, mainly landscapes, portraits, fishing and harbour scenes in oil. She was a friend of artist Dod Procter, and her sister Cordelia was married to the sculptor Frank Dobson. She was widowed by 1918 and was encouraged to paint by Cedric Morris. Eleanor Hughes
Eleanor Mary Hughes ( Waymouth), (3 April 1882 – 1959) was a New Zealand landscape artist who mostly painted in watercolours. She settled and worked in Britain and became an active member of the Newlyn School of artists and the nearby Lamorna artists colony. Biography Hughes was born in Christchurch in New Zealand. She was the daughter of Frederick and Alice Waymouth, and had a sister Alice Waymouth who was also a notable artist. Her family home, a homestead named Karewa in Christchurch, was sold and renamed in 1905 and became the historic property known as Mona Vale. Hughes grew up at Karewa and studied at Canterbury College School of Art. In 1900 she won a medal from the Canterbury Fine Art Society for a series of drawings of trees. Harold Harvey (1874–1941) was a Newlyn School, Newlyn School painter who painted scenes of working class Cornish fishermen, farmers and miners and Cornish landscapes.
