Newlander Apartments
The Newlander Apartments are a historic apartment building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Originally built as a single-family house in 1901 and expanded via a number of additions, it is notable as a well-preserved example of the small boarding houses and apartment buildings that housed much of Albuquerque's working-class population in the early 20th century. The building is listed in the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places. History The building was constructed in 1901 by John Newlander, a carpenter and manager of the Albuquerque Planing Mill Company. The ''Albuquerque Citizen'' described it as a "fifteen room residence, two story brick with modern convenience". Newlander built the house himself at a cost of $6,000. It was located in the Atlantic and Pacific Addition, which at the time was the western fringe of the city. By 1916, Newlander's wife Lula had converted the house to a four-unit apartment building.
