Newhouse Research Site
The Newhouse Research Site is a drug research facility situated east of Glasgow in central Scotland. It is located beside the M8 motorway in Newhouse, North Lanarkshire. The site is an early drug discovery research centre with a track record of generating a succession of products in the areas of anaesthesia and psychiatry. In 2007, the Royal Society of Chemistry Malcolm Campbell Memorial Prize was awarded to researchers for its work on a new anaesthesia drug, sugammadex. It currently employs 250 scientists across a range of disciplines including medicinal chemistry, molecular biology and drug metabolism. The site is currently the largest private drug discovery centre in Scotland, and one of the biggest in the UK. Newhouse is a hamlet and major road interchange located in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, sited immediately east of the Eurocentral industrial park, two miles west of the village of Salsburgh, east of Holytown and about north east of Motherwell. It consists of four small houses, a Premier Inn hotel and Beefeater restaurant an independently operated Esso petrol station under the name "Peggy White's Ltd"and a garden centre. It also has a large industrial park, which is the United Kingdom base for several multinational companies including Terex, Honeywell and the Newhouse research site and the Scottish distribution centre for The Co-operative Food. Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is a mental disorder characterized by periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood that last from days to weeks each. If the elevated mood is severe or associated with psychosis, it is called mania; if it is less severe, it is called hypomania. During mania, an individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy or irritable, and they often make impulsive decisions with little regard for the consequences. Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by continuous or relapsing episodes of psychosis. Asenapine
Asenapine, sold under the brand name Saphris among others, is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and acute mania associated with bipolar disorder. It was chemically derived via altering the chemical structure of the tetracyclic (''atypical'') antidepressant, mianserin. It was initially approved in the United States in 2009 and approved as a generic medication in 2020. Antipsychotics, also known as neuroleptics, are a class of psychotropic medication primarily used to manage psychosis (including delusions, hallucinations, paranoia or disordered thought), principally in schizophrenia but also in a range of other psychotic disorders. They are also the mainstay together with mood stabilizers in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Prior research has shown that use of any antipsychotic is associated with smaller brain tissue volumes, including white matter reduction and that this brain shrinkage is dose dependent and time dependent. Mirtazepine
Mirtazapine, sold under the brand name Remeron amongst others, is an Atypical antidepressant, atypical antidepressant, and as such is used primarily to treat Depression (mood), depression. Its effects may take up to four weeks, but can also manifest as early as one to two weeks. It is often used in cases of depression complicated by anxiety or insomnia. The effectiveness of mirtazapine is comparable to other commonly prescribed antidepressants. It is taken oral administration, by mouth. Common side effects include somnolence, sleepiness, vertigo, dizziness, hyperphagia, increased appetite and weight gain. Selective Relaxant Binding Agent
Selective relaxant binding agents (SRBAs) are a new class of drugs that selectively encapsulates and binds neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs). The first drug introduction of an SRBA is sugammadex. Sugammadex is a modified gamma cyclodextrin that specifically encapsulates and binds the aminosteroid NMBAs: rocuronium>vecuronium>>pancuronium.
