Newdegate Cave
The Hastings Caves State Reserve is the setting of a complex of caves and a natural warm springs located south of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Newdegate Cave, the largest dolomite cave in Australia open to tourists, is a part of the complex. They are located from the nearby Lune River fossil/gem centre and the Ida Bay Railway. The complex features natural warm springs, which cause many of the local streams to be at a year-round temperature of . This feeds a swimming pool at the Hastings Visitor Centre, which is available to visitors to swim in. The Hastings Visitor Centre was built in 2001 by Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife. Offering information, ticket sales, food and drink, souvenirs and free public WiFi. The Centre is a hub for the growing number of tourists that visit the Far South of Tasmania. Dolomite (rock)
Dolomite (also known as dolomite rock, dolostone or dolomitic rock) is a sedimentary carbonate rock that contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. It occurs widely, often in association with limestone and evaporites, though it is less abundant than limestone and rare in Cenozoic rock beds (beds less than about 66 million years in age). The first geologist to distinguish dolomite rock from limestone was Belsazar Hacquet in 1778. Most dolomite was formed as a magnesium replacement of limestone or of lime mud before lithification. The geological process of conversion of calcite to dolomite is known as dolomitization and any intermediate product is known as dolomitic limestone. Lune River, Tasmania
Lune River is a town in south-eastern Tasmania, Australia located near the mouth of a river of the same name. It is home to some 24 people. In the 1850s, much of the town's economic activity was based on timber mills, fishing and small-scale farming. The Lune River area is noted for its fossils, particularly those from the Jurassic period. According to Mineral Resources Tasmania, these fossils include petrified fern, agate, petrified wood and jasper. They report that it is one of the only sources of petrified fern in Tasmania. Ida Bay Railway
The Ida Bay Railway is a , narrow gauge heritage railway. Located south of Hobart, Tasmania, it is the most southerly railway in Australia. Early history of the area Tasmanian aborigines have occupied the island for a time still not precisely measured but confirmed as tens of thousands of years. The traditional owners of the land through which the railway runs were the Lyluequonny people. This clan of the South East nation occupied an area centred on what is now called Recherche Bay. Albert Ogilvie
Albert George Ogilvie (10 March 1890 – 10 June 1939) was an Australian politician and Premier of Tasmania from 22 June 1934 until his death on 10 June 1939. Ogilvie was the elder son of James Ogilvie. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Ballarat, Victoria, St Virgils College Hobart, and the University of Tasmania, where he graduated LL.B. in 1914. He was admitted to the bar in the same year. In 1919 he was elected to the House of Assembly for Division of Franklin, and retained the seat at each succeeding election. In August 1921 Ogilvie successfully defended George William King, who had been accused of the murder of Chrissie Venn. In October 1923 he joined the Lyons cabinet as attorney-general and minister for education, to which was added mines and forestry in March 1924. Francis Newdegate
Sir Francis Alexander Newdigate Newdegate, (31 December 1862 – 2 January 1936) was an English Conservative Party politician. After over twenty years in the House of Commons, he served as Governor of Tasmania from 1917 to 1920, and Governor of Western Australia from 1920 to 1924. Early life and family Born in 1862, he was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Francis William Newdigate and his first wife Charlotte Elizabeth Agnes Sophia Woodford, and grandson of Francis Parker Newdigate. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1883. He married Elizabeth Sophia Lucia Bagot on 13 October 1888.
