Newcastle (electoral District)
Newcastle was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia to the south and including some of the city of Nanaimo. It appeared in the 1916 and 1920 elections only. In 1924, portions of it were incorporated into the new Cowichan-Newcastle riding. Nanaimo, British Columbia
Nanaimo ( ) is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. As of the 2021 census, it had a population of 99,863, and it is known as "The Harbour City." The city was previously known as the "Hub City," which was attributed to its original layout design, whose streets radiated from the shoreline like the spokes of a wagon wheel, and to its central location on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is the headquarters of the Regional District of Nanaimo. Nanaimo is served by the coast-spanning Island Highway, the Island Rail Corridor, the BC Ferries system, and a local airport. 1916 British Columbia General Election
The 1916 British Columbia general election was the fourteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on July 5, 1916, and held on September 14, 1916. The new legislature met for the first time on March 1, 1917. The Liberal Party defeated the governing Conservative Party, winning 50% of the vote, almost double its share from the previous election. The Liberals won 36 of the 47 seats in the legislature. The Conservatives' popular vote fell from almost 60% to just over 40%, and took nine seats, forming the Official Opposition. Two other seats were won by independents. Unlike in the previous BC general election, in 1916 of the 47 MLAs 37 were elected in single member districts. Parker Williams
Parker Williams (May 31, 1872 – June 17, 1958) was a Welsh-born coal miner and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Newcastle in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1903 to 1918 as a Socialist and later as an independent Socialist. He was born in 1872 and worked as a coal miner in Wales, Alberta and Washington state. Williams also worked on railways in Ontario and British Columbia. In 1891, he married Eleanor Price. Williams lived in Nanaimo. In 1917, he resigned his seat in the assembly after he was named a commissioner for the Worker's Compensation Board and he served in that function until he retired in April 1943. He also was responsible for administering the Mothers Pension Act and the Old Age Pension Act. 1920 British Columbia General Election
The 1920 British Columbia general election was the fifteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on October 23, 1920, and held on December 1, 1920. The new legislature met for the first time on February 8, 1921. Although it lost eleven seats in the legislature, and fell from 50% of the popular vote to under 38%, the governing Liberal Party was able to hold on to a slim majority in the legislature for its second consecutive term in government. The Conservative Party also lost a significant share of its popular vote, but won six additional seats for a total of fifteen, and formed the Official Opposition. Almost a third of the vote and seven seats were won by independents and by a wide variety of fringe parties. This was the first general election in which women could vote and run for office. Samuel Guthrie (politician)
Samuel "Sam" Guthrie (1885 – January 25, 1960) was a Scottish-born miner, farmer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Newcastle from 1920 to 1924 as a Federated Labour member and Cowichan-Newcastle from 1933 to 1949 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation member in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire and worked as a boy in the Scottish coal mines. Guthrie came to Canada in 1911 and settled on Vancouver Island south of Nanaimo Nanaimo ( ) is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.
