William Spencer Newbury
William Spencer Newbury (September 19, 1834 – November 19, 1915), commonly known as W. S. Newbury, was an American businessman, politician, and lawyer active in the U.S. Midwest and Oregon who served as the mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1877 to 1879. Early life Newbury was born in Ripley, New York, on September 19, 1834. He graduated from the Wisconsin Mercantile College in Madison, Wisconsin, in the mid-1850s. After traveling around the U.S. South for several months, he lived for a time in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1860, he married Alzina Taylor. Career 1860s During the American Civil War, Newbury served in the 6th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. As an amateur, Newbury won the 1979 National Pairs Championship (with Cliff Wilson), and the 1980 Welsh Amateur Championship. Saul Newbury (August 14, 1870 – February 1, 1950), of Chicago, Illinois, was a collector of classic postage stamps. He was so involved in Chicago philately that he was referred to as "Chicago's No. 1 Collector." Collecting interests Newbury concentrated on building up world-class and world-famous collections. These included his 1847-1869 issues of the United States, which won him the Grand Award at CIPEX (Centennial International Philatelic Exhibition) in 1947. He was also famous for his collection of classic Brazilian Bull's Eye stamps, plus a collection of classic stamps of Shanghai, China, plus another collection of postage stamps and history of the country of Colombia and stamps issued by its states. Milton Sims "Mickey" Newbury Jr. (May 19, 1940 – September 29, 2002) was an American songwriter, recording artist, and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Early life and career Newbury was born in Houston, Texas, on May 19, 1940, to Mamie Ellen (née Taylor) and Milton Newbury. As a teenager, Newbury sang tenor in a moderately successful vocal group called The Embers. The group opened for several famous performers, such as Sam Cooke and Johnny Cash. Although Newbury tried to make a living from his music by singing in clubs, he put his musical career on hold at age 19 when he joined the Air Force. After four years in the military, he again set his sights on making a living as a songwriter. Before long, he moved to Nashville and signed with the prestigious publishing company Acuff-Rose Music. John Newbery
John Newbery (9 July 1713 – 22 December 1767), considered "The Father of Children's Literature", was an English publisher of books who first made children's literature a sustainable and profitable part of the literary market. He also supported and published the works of Christopher Smart, Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Johnson. In recognition of his achievements the Newbery Medal was named after him in 1922. Albert Ernest Newbury (29 January 1891 – 1 April 1941) was an Australian artist who was associated with the Australian tonalist movement. Career Newbury was born in Melbourne, one of the five sons of Samuel Newbury (1854–1930) and his wife Jessie Susannah Newbury née Dowsett. Samuel was the headmaster of Albert Park Grammar School; the Congregationalist minister Alfred Charles Newbury was an elder brother. Albert spent most of his childhood in Geelong. In 1909, at the age of 18, Newbury entered the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, Melbourne, where he studied under Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall.
