Dunsyre ( gd, Dùn Saghair) is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is from Carnwath. Dunsyre is associated with an ancient barony and parish church. The name of Dunsyre is of Celtic origin and is supposed to signify the "Hill of the Seer." It is located by the burn known as the South Medwin Water. The Pentland Hills are a range of hills southwest of Edinburgh, Scotland. The range is around in length, and runs southwest from Edinburgh towards Biggar and the upper Clydesdale. Etymology The name is first recorded for the farm of Pentland ( 1050, 1200) and probably derives from Brythonic ''pen llan'', head or top end of the church or enclosure. In the late 15th to mid-16th centuries, land transfers refer to Pentlandmure and Pentland – documents that also list adjacent parcels of land with such still-recognisable names as Loganehous, Hilend, Boghall and Mortounhall. 'Muir', in Pentlandmure, describes common grazings where the farm's livestock would be pastured in summer; and gradually the name was linked more specifically with the slopes of the nearby hills (perhaps Allermuir, Woodhouselee or Castlelaw). Carnwath
Carnwath (Gaelic: ''A' Chathair Nuadh''; English: "New Fort") is a moorland village on the southern edge of the Pentland Hills of South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The village lies about south of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is bounded by the North Medwyn and South Medwyn watercourses. History The former castle of Carnwath is believed to date to the mid 12th-century built under the orders of William de Sommerville (who died 1160). However, the only remains are the motte which is visible beside the Carnwath Golf Club (founded 1907), at the west end of the village. However, the motte is desceibed as ''"the most impressive Norman earthwork to survive in Lanarkshire."'' The motte today is a scheduled ancient monument. At the centre of Carnwath is Carnwath Cross, the mercat cross, set back a little where the Main Street widens to form the Market Square. Peebles ( gd, Na Pùballan) is a town in the Scottish Borders, Scotland. It was historically a royal burgh and the county town of Peeblesshire. According to the 2011 census, the population was 8,376 and the estimated population in June 2018 was 9,000. Most mills closed by the 1960s, although the last one remained open until 2015.
