Newberg, Oregon
Newberg is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. Located in the Portland metropolitan area, the city is home to George Fox University. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 25,138 making it the second most populous city in the county. History Ewing Young, after leading pioneering fur brigades in California, came to Portland in 1834 and settled on the west bank of the Willamette River near the mouth of Chehalem Creek, opposite of Champoeg. Young's home is believed to be the first house built by European-Americans on that side of the river. Later, Joseph Rogers settled near the Willamette River at what is now Newberg in 1848. The community was known early on as Chehalem, and later as Roger's Landing for Rogers who founded the settlement, and who died in 1855. In 1883, the community was platted. Stone Bank (formerly Newberg) is an unincorporated community located in the towns of Merton and Oconomowoc, in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. History Stone Bank was first settled in 1842 and had grist and saw mills. In 1858, the post office opened; a blacksmith shop and grocery store also opened. Churches and a cemetery were also established. Community services For over 100 years, the community supported and maintained the Stone Bank Fire Department which served the Towns of Oconomowoc and Merton with Fire, EMS, and Rescue services. The Stone Bank Fire Department also served portions of the Town of Ashippun with EMS services. SBFD dates back to 1907 and averaged 400 calls for service per year. Unfortunately, the fire department was overtaken by Western Lakes Fire District in 2020. Communities * Corey is an unincorporated community on M-60 near the eastern boundary with Fabius Township in St. Joseph County at . Corey was platted by Amanda Weatherwax in 1872. __NOTOC__ Lobster Newberg (also spelled Lobster Newburg or Lobster Newburgh) is an American seafood dish made from lobster, butter, cream, cognac, sherry, and eggs, with a secret ingredient found to be Cayenne pepper. A modern legend with no primary or early sources states that the dish was invented by Ben Wenberg, a sea captain in the fruit trade. He was said to have demonstrated the dish at Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City to the manager, Charles Delmonico, in 1876. After refinements by the chef, Charles Ranhofer, the creation was added to the restaurant's menu as ''Lobster à la Wenberg'' and it soon became very popular. The legend says that an argument between Wenberg and Charles Delmonico caused the dish to be removed from the menu. Newberg High School is the only public high school in Newberg, Oregon, United States. History The current campus is Newberg High School's third location. The first campus (1911-36) The original high school, a three-story building that opened in 1911, is located at 714 E. Sixth Street. It was there that the school's newspaper, ''Echoes'', got its name; the students marveled at how even the slightest sound reverberated through the new building's hallways. The Newberg School District currently uses the building as the district offices.
