New Zealand State Highway 54
State Highway 54 (SH 54) is a New Zealand state highway in the Manawatū District in the North Island. It runs from at Vinegar Hill (near Hunterville) to near Palmerston North. The highway connects the Manawatu agricultural town of Feilding to the New Zealand state highway network and forms an alternative route to SH 1 and SH 3 between the North Island Volcanic Plateau and Palmerston North. Route SH 54 begins at a junction with near the locality of Vinegar Hill, north of Hunterville. It steeply descends to cross the Rangitikei River before winding along the eastern side of the Rangitikei Valley. The route then exits the valley and heads to Cheltenham, where it meets Kimbolton Road at a T-junction. Vinegar Hill, New Zealand
Vinegar Hill is a locality on State Highway 1 in New Zealand's North Island; a camp at that locality and an annual Christmas celebration held at the camp. Location Vinegar Hill is on the banks of the Rangitikei River within the Putai Ngahere Reserve, near the junction of State Highway 54 and State Highway 1, about 5 km north of Hunterville in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand. Etymology There is a misconception over how this Vinegar Hill was named. Some think that it is named after the Battle of Vinegar Hill in Ireland. However, the name was derived from a source closer than that. Vinegar Hill was named after an incident in early colonial times: a bullock cart carrying barrels of vinegar overturned after the bullocks slipped on the muddy track on the hillside, covering the hillside in vinegar from the broken barrels. The Rangitikei District is a territorial authority district located primarily in the Manawatū-Whanganui region in the North Island of New Zealand, although a small part, the town of Ngamatea (13.63% by land area), lies in the Hawke's Bay Region. Kimbolton, New Zealand
Kimbolton is a rural village north of Feilding in the Manawatū District of the North Island of New Zealand. Kimbolton is named after Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, a village in England which is the site of Kimbolton Castle, once the home of the Duke of Manchester. It was originally called Birmingham, after Birmingham, England. The soil and climate in the area is ideal for rhododendrons and there are two rhododendron gardens in the area, including the former garden of the New Zealand Rhododendron Association, which was largely built by John Stuart Yeates, now called Heritage Park. Rangiwahia is a small, elevated, farming settlement in the North Island, New Zealand, northeast of Kimbolton, New Zealand, Kimbolton in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. It is in the Kiwitea valley, near the Whanahuia Range of the Ruahine Range, Ruahines. Due to its height and the nearby ranges, Rangiwahia has a mean annual rainfall of 1267mm; 309mm more than Feilding, Feilding's. Mangaweka
} Mangaweka is a township on the State Highway One (SH1), Manawatū-Whanganui region, in the North Island of New Zealand, with a population of just under 200. It is between Taihape to the north and Hunterville to the south. The Rangitikei River runs adjacent to the township, which is popular for rafting, kayaking, fishing and swimming. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "weka stream" for ''Mangaweka''. The township is of interest not only for its historic main street, but also because of the growing artists' community. The main street is preserved in its original state due to SH1 being re-located in the early 1980s. This tore the heart out of the township as the main street became somewhat redundant. As a result, the settlement has become a tourist attraction. A significant feature in Mangaweka is an elevated DC-3 aircraft. Newbury, New Zealand
Newbury is a rural community in Palmerston North City and Manawatu District, in the Manawatū-Whanganui region in New Zealand's central North Island. It includes the intersection of State Highway 3 between Palmerston North and Sanson, and State Highway 54 between Palmerston North and Feilding. History The area was settled by English farmers in the late 19th century. Many settlers in the area, including the Gore family, were from Newbury, Berkshire. The Newbury Country Women's Institute was established by women in the community in 1934. By 2014, it had changed its name to the Newbury Women's Institute and had 23 members aged 65 to 89. In 2015, a driver was sentenced to community work over a fatal accident at the intersection of Newbury and Roberts Lines.
