New Zealand State Highway 5
State Highway 5 (SH 5), one of New Zealand's eight New Zealand state highway network, national highways, runs from State Highway 1 (New Zealand), State Highway 1 at Tīrau, in the South Waikato District, south Waikato, to New Zealand State Highway 2, State Highway 2, close to the Hawke's Bay coast at Bay View, New Zealand, Bay View, 10 km north of Napier, New Zealand, Napier. It is the second shortest of the national highways. SH 5 is a two-lane single carriageway, except for a two-kilometre section of dual carriageway in Rotorua, and has at-grade intersections and property accesses in both rural and urban areas. The NZ Transport Agency classifies SH 5 as a regional strategic highway, except for the section concurrent with SH 1 around Taupō, where it is classified as a national strategic road. A thermal column (or thermal) is a rising mass of buoyant air, a convective current in the atmosphere, that transfers heat energy vertically. Thermals are created by the uneven heating of Earth's surface from solar radiation, and are an example of convection, specifically atmospheric convection. Opepe, New Zealand
Opepe was a settlement in New Zealand, a few miles southeast of Taupō. It was the scene of an attack on European militia by Māori on 7 June 1869, in which nine members of the militia were killed. The Opepe Maori settlement was at the intersection of two major pre-European walking tracks (Taupo- Napier and Urewera-Tokaanu). It was the birthplace of the Māori leader Te Rangitahau. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "place of the moth" for ''Ōpepe''. During Te Kooti's War, in early June 1869 Te Kooti and about 150 of his supporters moved towards Lake Taupō in the center of the North Island. At Opepe, just short of Taupō, they ran into party of fourteen Militia, who were camped in the abandoned village. Nine of the militia were killed with no loss to Te Kooti. Esk River, Hawke's Bay
The Esk River of Hawke's Bay, in the eastern North Island of New Zealand, one of two rivers of that name in the country, is one of Hawke's Bay's major rivers. It flows south from the slopes of Taraponui in the Maungaharuru Range before turning east to reach Hawke Bay north of Napier. State Highway 5 follows the lower course of the river for several kilometres close to the settlement of Eskdale. The river is probably named after the Esk River in southern Scotland and north-west England. Where the river reaches the sea, it ponds behind a shingle bank. At times the sea drives up shingle that blocks the outlet until the ponding water breaks through. The outlet occasionally needs to be opened artificially to prevent flooding. Mohaka River
The Mohaka river is on the North Island of New Zealand in the east central region of Hawke’s Bay. Mohaka is a Māori language, Maori word, roughly translated it means “place for dancing”. The iwi (Māori tribes) associated with the Mohaka River are Ngāti Pāhauwera, Ngāti Hineuru, Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Mana Ahuriri. The headwaters are found in the Kaweka and Kaimanawa ranges. From the range it winds southeast before twisting northeast and finally southeast again to empty into the Pacific Ocean near the town of Mohaka. Hatepe Eruption
The Hatepe eruption, named for the Hatepe Plinian pumice tephra layer, sometimes referred to as the Taupō eruption or Horomatangi Reef Unit Y eruption, is dated to 232 CE ± 10 and was Taupō Volcano's most recent major eruption. It is thought to be New Zealand's largest eruption within the last 20,000 years. The eruption ejected some of bulk tephra, of which just over was ejected in approximately 6–7 minutes. This makes it one of the largest eruptions in the last 5,000 years, comparable to the Minoan eruption in the 2nd millennium BCE, the 946 eruption of Paektu Mountain, the 1257 eruption of Mount Samalas, and the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. Kaingaroa Forest
Kaingaroa Forest covers of the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand, and is the largest forest plantation in New Zealand, and the second largest in the Southern Hemisphere (after the Sabie/Graskop plantation in South Africa). The forest stretches from Lake Taupō in the south to Kawerau to the north and has roughly 20 million trees. The headquarters of the forest are at the small settlement of Kaingaroa, Bay of Plenty, southeast of Rotorua. Prior to planting the area was a tussock and scrub plateau (ranging between high), formed on volcanic ash.
