New Zealand State Highway 26
State Highway 26 (SH 26) is a state highway in the North Island of New Zealand, linking Hamilton with the Coromandel Peninsula. It starts from the Waikato Expressway at Ruakura on the eastern outskirts of Hamilton and travels 96 kilometres to Kopu, 6 kilometres south of Thames. It passes through Morrinsville, Te Aroha and Paeroa. Major intersections Route changes When the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway opened in July 2022, the western terminus of SH 26 was rerouted from its old terminus on Cambridge Road in Hillcrest to Ruakura Road to connect to the new location of SH 1 in a full diamond interchange. Waikato Expressway
The Waikato Expressway is a dual carriageway section of (SH 1) in New Zealand's Waikato region. Constructed in stages, it forms part of the link between Auckland and Hamilton. Currently stretching from Auckland to south of Cambridge, the highway was first built in 1993. Throughout its current lifetime, it had underwent many upgrades to optimize traffic flow throughout the Waikato region, including various bypasses of most towns in the region, and lastly Hamilton in 2022. The final part of the Expressway was completed on 12 July 2022. The expressway forms a long continuous four-lane dual carriageway from the Bombay Hills to beyond the town of Cambridge, south-east of Hamilton. Taupiri
Taupiri is a small town of about 500 people on the eastern bank of the Waikato River in the Waikato District of New Zealand. It is overlooked by Taupiri mountain, the sacred burial ground for the Waikato tribes of the Māori people, located just to the north. Taupiri is located near the northern end of the Waikato Basin immediately south of the junction of the Mangawara Stream (which drains the northern part of the basin) and the Waikato River. The Waikato River then flows northward through the Taupiri Gorge between the Hakarimata Range to the south and the Taupiri Range to the north, into the Lower Waikato. Hillcrest, Waikato
Hillcrest is a suburb in southeastern Hamilton in New Zealand. The suburb is home to the University of Waikato and consequently has a large student population. It is located on the east side of the Hamilton Town Belt, a series of public parks that run from the Hamilton Gardens to Ruakura in its eastern section. History The area was formerly known as Steele's Hill, named after Capt. W. Steele. Much of it was covered in orchards in the early 1900s. Whangamatā
The town of Whangamatā is on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 30 kilometres north of Waihi, to the north of the western extremity of the Bay of Plenty. In holiday times the population swells considerably: New Year's celebrations fill the town to over 25,000 though this falls soon after New Year's Day. Tairua
The town of Tairua is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. It lies at the mouth of the Tairua River on its north bank and on the small Paku Peninsula. Tairua is a Māori name which translates literally as ''tai'': tides, ''rua'': two.Wises New Zealand Guide, 7th Edition, 1979. p. 412. Directly opposite Tairua on the south bank of the river's estuary is the smaller settlement of Pauanui. Hauraki District
Hauraki District is a territorial authority within the Hauraki region of New Zealand. The seat of the council is at Paeroa. The area covered by the district extends from the southwest coast of the Firth of Thames southeast towards Te Aroha, although that town lies beyond its boundaries. Tīrau
Tīrau is a small town in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand, 50 kilometres southeast of Hamilton. The town has a population of 804 (2018 census). In the Māori language, "Tīrau" means "place of many cabbage trees." Tīrau is a major junction in the New Zealand state highway network.
