New Zealand Professional Boxing Association (NZPBA) is one of the four governing bodies for the sport of professional boxing in New Zealand. NZPBA is a non-profit organisation. History The Body was founded as South Pacific Boxing Association, with the name changed to New Zealand Professional Boxing Association inc in 1984 at their AGM. The new name was greeted and accepted by the World Bodies and Commonwealth Boxing Council. In 2006, NZPBA had their first female national champion with Daniella Smith defeating Sue Glassey for the Super Welterweight title. Smith is New Zealand's second professional National Champion. In April 2016, NZPBA sanctioned New Zealand's first major world title fight (from one of the four major sanctioning bodies) for the WBC female middleweight title with Kali Reis defeating Maricela Cornejo by split decision. Professional Boxing
Professional boxing, or prizefighting, is regulated, sanctioned boxing. Professional boxing bouts are fought for a purse bid, purse that is divided between the boxers as determined by contract. Most professional bouts are supervised by a regulatory authority to guarantee the fighters' safety. Most high-profile bouts obtain the endorsement of a sanctioning body, which awards championship belts, establishes rules, and assigns its own judges and referees. In contrast with amateur boxing, professional bouts are typically much longer and can last up to twelve rounds, though less significant fights can be as short as four rounds. Protective headgear is not permitted, and boxers are generally allowed to take substantial punishment before a fight is halted. Marea Motu (30 December 1989 Kaitaia, New Zealand) is a New Zealand Maori Professional Boxer. Motu is currently ranked 2nd in the IBF in the Junior Featherweight division. She is a four division New Zealand champion, holding more New Zealand titles then any other female boxer. She broke the 14 year record set by Daniella Smith for holding the most titles in February 2022. Amateur boxing Motu discovered boxing at the age of 13. Te Arani Moana Daniels (born 15 July 1988, Whangarei, New Zealand) is a New Zealand Maori professional female boxer. She is a three time New Zealand National Professional Boxing champion, holding the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association Light Heavyweight title, Pro Box NZ Super Middleweight title, and Pro Box NZ Light Heavyweight title. Sarah Long (born Te Haroto, New Zealand 27 April 1987) is a New Zealand professional boxer and kickboxer. She is the current NZPBA New Zealand national heavyweight champion. Uaine Fa Junior (born 19 October 1989) is a New Zealand professional boxer. As an amateur he represented Tonga at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze medal in the super-heavyweight division; he also represented Tonga at the Oceania Championships, winning gold and multiple silver medals. Nailini Inaise Vae Helu (born 20 November 1993, Nukualofa, Tonga) is a professional boxer who lives in New Zealand. Helu is the world's first Tongan professional female boxer. Helu has won multiple amateur titles and has peaked 6th on BoxRec, 6th WIBA, top 2 in WBA Oceania and 10th WBC female professional boxing rankings.
