National Basketball League (New Zealand)
The National Basketball League (NBL) is a men's semi-professional basketball league in New Zealand. In 1981, a group of club and provincial teams came together to create a men's national basketball league. The following year, the league was brought under the management of the New Zealand Basketball Federation. The league quickly grew in size and popularity due to the influx of sponsors and American import players. The early 1990s held dwindling fortunes for New Zealand basketball, with reduced TV coverage, sponsorships, and crowd numbers. The sport's popularity increased in the 2000s with the success of the Tall Blacks and the introduction of the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL. In the early days, Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington were the benchmark teams of the league. 1989 New Zealand NBL Season
The 1989 NBL season was the eighth season of the National Basketball League. Ponsonby's last-place finish in 1988 saw them dropped from the league and replaced by 1988 Conference Basketball League (CBL) champions Palmerston North. Canterbury won the championship in 1989 to claim their second league title. They came from fourth place at the finals weekend to claim the championship, knocking over the top-seeded Palmerston North 92–84 in the semi-finals, before defeating Auckland 91–83 in the final. The 1995 NBL season was the 14th season of the National Basketball League. Only one change occurred heading into the 1995 season, with 1994 Conference Basketball League (CBL) champions Northland joining the top-flight league for the first time. The 1993 NBL season was the 12th season of the National Basketball League. Hutt Valley won the championship in 1993 to claim their second league title. Head coach Jeff Green guided Hutt Valley over Canterbury in the final with Peter Pokai hitting the game-winning jumper. Tyrone Brown (basketball)
Tyrone Brown (born 1973) is an African-American man from Texas who, in 1990, was sentenced to a life term in a Texas maximum security prison and was kept incarcerated for 17 years after testing positive once for smoking marijuana while on probation for robbing a man of two dollars at the age of 17. No one was hurt in the robbery, and Brown had voluntarily returned the wallet to the victim.
