Each operation covered by the medal was represented by a clasp on the ribbon; by the time it was replaced in 2002, four clasps had been issued, covering operations between 1956 and 1991. The medal was never issued without a clasp. The NZGSM 1992 was issued in two varieties - one for warlike service, and another for non-warlike service. Warlike operations were commemorated by this medal, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations were commemorated by the NZGSM 1992 (Non-Warlike) in bronze.
