New Zealand At The 1994 Commonwealth Games
New Zealand (abbreviated NZL) sent a team of 134 competitors and 57 officials to the 1994 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The flagbearer at the opening ceremony was Brian Fowler, and at the closing ceremony was Stephen Petterson. New Zealand has competed in every games, starting with the first British Empire Games in 1930 at Hamilton, Ontario. Selection is the responsibility of the New Zealand Olympic Committee. The New Zealand Olympic Committee (before 1994, The ''New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association'') is both the National Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Association in New Zealand responsible for selecting athletes to represent New Zealand in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. While a founder member of the International Olympic Committee, New Zealand did not send its own team to compete until the Games of the VI Olympiad (Antwerp 1920), though at the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics New Zealand and Australia competed as "Australasia". Kirsten Hellier
Kirsten Louise Hellier (née Smith; born 6 October 1969 in Tokoroa) is a former javelin thrower, who represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth and the Olympic Games. She set her personal best (62.52 metres) in 1994 with the old javelin type. Hellier was the coach of World Champion shot putter Valerie Adams from 1998 until 2010. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games Hellier won the silver medal in the women's javelin with a throw of 60.40 m. She placed 8th at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the same event. Hellier competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics where she placed 17th overall in qualifying with a throw of 59.34 m. Hellier currently works at Macleans College as a sports co-coordinator. John Steel (swimmer)
John Meredith Steel (born 27 October 1972 in Auckland) is a former freestyle swimmer from New Zealand, who competed at two consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. Steel won two silver medals (4 × 100 m Freestyle and 4 × 200 m Freestyle) at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Four years earlier Steel captured the bronze medal with the Men's 4x200 Freestyle Relay Team at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in his hometown of Auckland. Steel now works for Air NZ as a flight attendant. Despite being from New Zealand he won the 1990 'Open' ASA National Championship 100 metres freestyle title. Greg Yelavich
Gregory Thomas Yelavich (born 8 March 1957) is a Shooting sports, competitive pistol shooter from Auckland, New Zealand. As well as winning numerous national pistol titles, Yelavich has the distinction of having won more Commonwealth Games medals than any other New Zealander (12). He was the New Zealand flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He has represented New Zealand at two Olympic Games — 1988 Summer Olympics, Seoul 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics, Barcelona 1992. In 1990, Yelavich was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. Sarah Ulmer
Sarah Elizabeth Ulmer (born 14 March 1976) is a former Olympic cyclist. She is the first New Zealander to win an Olympic cycling gold medal, which she won in the 3km individual pursuit at the 2004 Athens Olympics setting a world record. After the 2004 Olympics, she held the Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championship Pursuit titles, and the records for those events. Biography Ulmer was born in Auckland, where she studied at the Diocesan School for Girls. Her grandfather Ron Ulmer was a track cyclist for New Zealand at the 1938 British Empire Games. Her father Gary was a national road and track champion. Individual pursuit races In 1994 she won the World Junior Championship and placed second at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada with a time of 3 minutes 51 seconds. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics she was seventh after qualifying 6th with 3m 43s. At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur she won the gold medal with 3m 41.7s.
