New Zealand Amateur
The New Zealand Amateur is the national amateur golf championship of New Zealand. It has been played annually since 1893, except for the war years, and is organised by New Zealand Golf. Currently the event is played over five days and consists of a 36-hole stroke-play qualifying stage after which the leading 32 play five rounds of match-play. The final is over 36 holes. History The first tournament was organised by Otago Golf Club "open to members of any recognised Now Zealand club" held on 30 November and 1 and 2 December 1893, "for the amateur championship of the colony." 16 players entered, primarily from the home club. Bernard Wood (cricketer)
Bernard Bedingfield Wood (25 February 1886 – 8 July 1974) was a New Zealand cricketer, golfer and businessman. Life and family Bernard Wood was born into a prominent Christchurch business family. His grandfather, William Derisley Wood (1824–1904), founded Wood Bros flour mills in Christchurch. Bernard’s father, William Wood (1858–1921), one of six brothers, founded William Wood and Company in the 1890s, which Bernard took over after his father’s death. William Wood and Company was a trading and manufacturing company dealing mostly in agricultural produce and machinery. Bernard Wood attended Christ's College, Christchurch. In December 1913 he married Eileen Ward (1886–1952), daughter of Sir Joseph Ward, who had been New Zealand's Prime Minister from 1906 to 1912. The wedding took place at the Basilica, Wellington. James Samuel Vincent (born May 18, 1963) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. Vincent won the State of Michigan "Mr. Basketball" award in 1981, the first year the award was given. He attended Lansing's Eastern High School, where he scored 61 points in one game as a senior, breaking the previous city scoring record of 54 set by Magic Johnson at Everett High School. A 6'2" point guard, Vincent followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jay Vincent, attending Michigan State University and earning ''Sporting News'' All-America honors in 1985. After graduating from college, he was selected by the Boston Celtics with the twentieth pick of the 1985 NBA draft. Daniel Hillier (born 26 July 1998) is a New Zealand professional golfer. He won the 2021 Challenge Costa Brava on the Challenge Tour. Amateur career Hillier had a successful amateur career, winning the New Zealand Amateur twice, in 2015 and 2017. He won the Australian Boys' Amateur in 2016 and was twice winner of the New Zealand under-19 championship, in 2015 and 2016. Hillier was also twice winner of the Bledisloe Cup, in 2016 and 2018, as the leading amateur in the New Zealand Open, and was a co-medalist, with Cole Hammer, at the 2018 U.S. Amateur. As a 17-year-old amateur, Hillier won the 2015 John Jones Steel Harewood Open on the Charles Tour. He beat Jim Cusdin by a stroke after finishing on 277, 11-under-par, with three birdies in his last five holes.
