New York State Route 268
New York State Route 268 (NY 268) is a state highway located in southwestern Delaware County, New York, in the United States. It runs from NY 97 in Hancock north over to a bridge over Cannonsville Reservoir near the former site of the hamlet of Rock Rift in Tompkins. There, it ends at a junction with NY 10. NY 268 meets the Quickway ( NY 17) (Future Interstate 86) east of the Hancock village limits. From Hancock to the NY 17 interchange, NY 268 follows the pre-Quickway routing of NY 17. Between NY 17 and NY 10, the route follows the former alignment of New York State Route 236, a connector between then-NY 17 and NY 10 that existed during the 1930s. In the floods of 2006 some of the areas along this rural highway suffered serious landslides, leading to a temporary closure of the road. Hancock (village), New York
Hancock is a village in Delaware County, New York, United States. The population was 1,031 at the 2010 census. The village is in the west part of the town of Hancock at the junction of NY Routes 17 and 97. Hancock is located at the confluence of the East and West branches of the Delaware River. Hancock owes its former importance mainly to the Erie Railroad from 1848. The Erie merged into the Erie Lackawanna Railway in 1960. The railroad still exists as the Southern Tier Line of the Norfolk Southern Railway, leased to the Central New York Railroad, but sees only a few freight trains weekly. The Scranton Branch of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway bridged the West Branch of the Delaware River just west of the village; this railway's main activity in the area was at Cadosia junction, a few miles up the East Branch of the Delaware River. A reference route is an unsigned highway assigned by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to roads that possess a signed name (mainly parkways), that NYSDOT has determined are too minor to have a signed touring route number, or are former touring routes that are still state-maintained. The majority of reference routes are owned by the state of New York and maintained by NYSDOT; however, some exceptions exist. The reference route designations are normally posted on reference markers, small green signs located every tenth-mile on the side of the road, though a few exceptions exist to this practice as well. Deposit is a village in Broome and Delaware counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. The village, on the county line, is half within the town of Sanford (Broome County) and half within the town of Deposit (Delaware County). The Broome County portion of Deposit is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The position of the village is at the boundary of White and Indian territory, as imposed by the 1763 Fort Stanwix Treaty. The village was incorporated in 1811 in Delaware County.
