New York State Route 255
New York State Route 255 (NY 255) was a state highway located in Livingston County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route was at an intersection with NY 256 south of the community of Scottsburg in Sparta. Its northern terminus was at a junction with NY 15 in Conesus. NY 255, known locally as Stagecoach Road, was assigned in 1930 and maintained by Livingston County from 1983 onward as County Route 71 (CR 71). The concurrent state highway designation was removed in 1995. Route description NY 255 began at an intersection with NY 256 southeast of the hamlet of Scottsburg and north of the village of Dansville in the town of Sparta. The office of Superintendent of Public Works was created by an 1876 amendment to the New York State Constitution. It abolished the canal commissioners and established that the Department of Public Works execute all laws relating to canal maintenance and navigation except for those functions performed by the New York State Engineer and Surveyor who continued to prepare maps, plans and estimates for canal construction and improvement. General Drafting Corporation of Convent Station, New Jersey, founded by Otto G. In January 1930, the U.S. state of New York implemented a major renumbering of its state highways. Many previously existing numbered routes were renumbered or realigned. At the same time, many state highways that were previously unnumbered received designations. Most of the highways with numbers in the 100s to 300s were assigned at this time. Route numbers were assigned in clusters based on their general location. Because some of these route numbers are no longer in use, the pattern of clusters is not fully apparent today. Before 1930, the route numbering system in place had its origins in the 1920s. At the time, New York only assigned numbers to a small subset of its state highways.
