New York State Route 226 (NY 226) is a north–south state highway in the Finger Lakes region of New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an interchange with the Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and NY 17) just west of the Savona village line in the town of Bath. Its northern terminus is at an intersection with NY 14A in the town of Reading. Route description NY 226 begins at an intersection with the off-ramps from interchange 40 on the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86 / NY 17) in the town of Bath. An eastward continuation of County Route 12 (CR 12), the two routes are concurrent for a short distance, crossing under the expressway as West Lamoka Avenue. NY 226 and CR 12 cross Mud Creek and enter the village of Savona, where CR 12 terminates, and NY 226 continues eastward as a four-lane arterial. Orange is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,409 at the 2020 census. The Town of Orange is in the southwestern part of the county and is east of Bath. History The first settlements took place ''circa'' 1798. The town was formed from Town of Wayne in 1813 as the "Town of Jersey" while still part of Steuben County. General Drafting Corporation of Convent Station, New Jersey, founded by Otto G. Lindberg in 1909, was one of the "Big Three" road map publishers in the United States from 1930 to 1970, along with H.M. Gousha and Rand McNally.General Drafting Co., Inc. company brochure, 1982. 1930 State Highway Renumbering (New York)
In January 1930, the U.S. state of New York implemented a major renumbering of its state highways. Many previously existing numbered routes were renumbered or realigned. At the same time, many state highways that were previously unnumbered received designations. Most of the highways with numbers in the 100s to 300s were assigned at this time. Route numbers were assigned in clusters based on their general location. Because some of these route numbers are no longer in use, the pattern of clusters is not fully apparent today. Before 1930, the route numbering system in place had its origins in the 1920s. At the time, New York only assigned numbers to a small subset of its state highways. Route numbers spanned from 1–80, with routes running primarily north–south having even numbers and routes generally running east–west having odd numbers.
