New York State Election, 1855
The 1855 New York state election was held on November 6, 1855, to elect the Secretary of State, the State Comptroller, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer, the State Engineer, two judges of the New York Court of Appeals, a Canal Commissioner and an Inspector of State Prisons, as well as members of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. Nominations Both the Whig state convention and the Anti-Nebraska state convention met on September 26 at Syracuse, New York. John Alsop King presided at the Whig convention, Reuben E. Fenton at the Anti-Nebraska convention. After organizing the Whigs, the delegates decided to join the Anti-Nebraskans, and marched to their assembling place. There the two parties merged and adopted the name Republican Party, and continued as the Republican state convention with King and Fenton as co-chairmen.

Lemuel Stetson
Lemuel Stetson (March 13, 1804 – May 17, 1868) was an attorney, politician and judge from Plattsburgh, New York. He was most notable for his service as judge of the Clinton County, New York court and a United States Representative from New York. Early life Stetson was born in Champlain, New York, one of thirteen children born to Reuben and Lois (Smedley) Stetson of Hardwick, Massachusetts. Stetson was raised on his family's farm and attended the public schools of Champlain. He attended the academy in Plattsburgh and received additional instruction in classical languages from the academy's principal. Stetson taught school while studying law with attorneys Julius C. Lorenzo Burrows (March 15, 1805 – March 6, 1885) was an American merchant, banker and politician. Life He attended the academies at Plainfield, Connecticut and Westerly, Rhode Island. He moved to New York and settled in Albion, N.Y., in 1824. He was employed as a clerk until 1826 when he engaged in mercantile pursuits. He assisted in establishing the Bank of Albion in 1839 and served as cashier. He was Treasurer of Orleans County in 1840 and was Assignee in bankruptcy for Orleans County in 1841. He was Supervisor of the Town of Barre in 1845, and was elected as a Whig to the 31st and 32nd United States Congresses, serving from March 4, 1849 to March 4, 1853. Aaron Ward (July 5, 1790 – March 2, 1867) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. He served three separate stints in the U.S. House of Representatives during the early-to-mid-19th Century. Life He was born in Sing Sing, Westchester County, New York the son of Moses Ward. He completed preparatory studies in Mount Pleasant Academy, and then studied law. At the beginning of the War of 1812 he was commissioned a lieutenant in the 29th Regiment of Infantry, and in 1814 commissioned a captain. Afterwards he continued to serve in the State Militia, and in 1830 he was promoted to major general. Preston King (October 14, 1806November 12, 1865) was an American politician who served three terms as a United States representative and Senator from New York from 1857 to 1863. Early life King was born in Ogdensburg, New York on October 14, 1806. He was the illegitimate son of John King and Margaret Galloway. At an early age, he was committed to the guardianship of Louis Hasbrouck, an Ogdensburg lawyer.
