New York State Athletic Commission
The New York State Athletic Commission or NYSAC, also known as the New York Athletic Commission, is a division of the New York State Department of State which regulates all contests and exhibitions of unarmed combat within the state of New York, including licensure and supervision of promoters, boxers, professional wrestlers, seconds, ring officials, managers, and matchmakers. In 2016, the NYSAC was authorized to oversee all mixed martial arts contests in New York. The commission is based in New York City. History The NYSAC was founded in 1911, when the Frawley Law legalized prizefighting in New York state. The bill was signed on July 26, 1911 and that same day Governor John Alden Dix appointed Bartow S. Weeks, John J. Dixon, and Frank S. O'Neil to serve on the state athletic commission. Arteen Ekizian (September 28, 1901 – November 16, 1981), better known by the ring name Ali Baba, was an Armenian American professional wrestler and World Heavyweight Championship (Original), World Heavyweight Champion who was active in the early portion of the twentieth century. Early life Ekizian was born in Samsun, Ottoman Empire. During the Armenian genocide, his father and younger brother were murdered and Ekizian was sold as a slave to Arabs. After four years of hard labor, he escaped and moved to the United States in 1920 with help from his uncle Garabed in Massachusetts. Career Ekizian began professional wrestling while serving in the United States Navy. He became the Fleet Championship in the middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight divisions. AWA World Heavyweight Championship (Boston Version)
The AWA World Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship promoted by Paul Bowser in Boston. The title was created by Bowser after Gus Sonnenberg, who had beaten Ed Lewis for the original World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship in 1929, was stripped of recognition as champion by the National Boxing Association. Browser continued to recognize Sonnenberg as champion and named his championship after the "American Wrestling Association" governing body, which hitherto did not actually exist. Rival promoters, including Jack Curley, countered by forming the National Wrestling Association and its NWA World Heavyweight Championship. During Don Eagle's second reign, splinter titles were created by regional promoters in Chicago and Ohio. Jim Browning (wrestler)
James Orville Browning (March 31, 1903 – June 19, 1936) was an American professional wrestler. Professional wrestling career Browning was raised on a farm in Missouri. After working in construction and on oil fields, Browning made his debut in professional wrestling in 1923. he went on to work in many territories in the United States and Canada, feuding with wrestlers such as Jim Londos, Joe Stecher, and Ed "Strangler" Lewis. He was managed by Frank Smith. On February 20, 1933, Browning defeated Ed "Strangler" Lewis for the New York State Athletic Commission World Heavyweight Championship in Madison Square Gardens with an airplane scissors hold. He held the championship for 490 days, during which time he drew large crowds. On June 25, 1934, Browning dropped the title to Jim Londos. The World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship was the first recognized professional wrestling world heavyweight championship created in 1905 to identify the best catch as catch can wrestler in the world.
