New York Nationals were a New York City Football (soccer), soccer team which played in the American Soccer League (1921–1933), American Soccer League between 1927 and 1930. A New York Nationals (USL), New York Nationals team also played in the United Soccer League (1984–85), United Soccer League in 1984. History In 1927, Charles Stoneham, owner of the New York Giants (NL), New York Giants baseball team took over the ASL Indiana Flooring franchise. He wanted to rename the team the Giants. However, as there was already a New York Giants (soccer), New York Giants in the ASL, Stoneham had to settle for renaming his soccer team the ''New York Nationals''. Nationals won the 1928 National Challenge Cup, beating Chicago's Bricklayers and Masons F.C. 4–1 on aggregate in the final. Then in 1929 they won the Lewis Cup, the ASL league cup, defeating New Bedford Whalers over three games. Robert Millar (soccer)
Robert Millar (May 12, 1890 – February 22, 1967) was a soccer player who played as a forward and the coach of the United States national team at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. During his at times tumultuous Hall of Fame career, he played with over a dozen teams in at least five U.S. leagues as well as two seasons in the Scottish Football League. He finished his career as a successful professional and national team coach. Playing Professional In 1909, Millar began his professional career with St Mirren of the Scottish Football League. He left St Mirren in 1911 to move to the United States, joining Disston A.A. during the 1912–1913 season. In 1913, he moved to the Brooklyn Field Club of the National Association Football League (NAFBL). In January 1914, Brooklyn played Disston in the quarterfinals of the 1914 American Cup. American Soccer Association Cup
The American Soccer Association Cup was an open cup-tie competition that took place in 1929. The entries for this tournament were the ASL teams and amateur clubs from the Southern New York State Association. The amateur clubs played the early rounds to earn the right to play off against the ASL entrants in the final stages."Cup Pairings Are Announced". (February 19, 1929). ''Chester Times'', p.13 col.2 The tournament ran from February to May. The sixth round which constituted the tournament proper included the seven ASL teams and the only amateur side to qualify, the Brooklyn Celtics. The final was played over two legs with Providence gaining the title over the New York Nationals with a 4-2 win on May 20 after the teams drew 2-2 on May 18. A May 19 game was played but officials called the game on account of weather and continued as an exhibition match with the teams playing to a 4-4 draw. The Lewis Cup was an American soccer trophy established in 1914 as the championship trophy for the amateur Blue Mountain League, which was composed of clubs from the Lehigh Valley region of northeastern Pennsylvania. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, commonly known as the U.S. Open Cup (USOC), is a knockout cup competition in men's soccer in the United States. It is the country's oldest ongoing national soccer competition. The competition was first held during the 1913–1914 season as the National Challenge Cup, with Brooklyn Field Club winning a trophy donated by Thomas Dewar for the promotion of American soccer. Davey Brown
David "Davey" Brown (November 18, 1898 – September 17, 1970) was an American soccer forward. He spent most of his career playing for teams in New Jersey and New York, gaining his greatest fame with the New York Giants. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Professional career Brown began his professional career with Ford before moving to West Hudson A.A. for the 1917–1918 National Association Foot Ball League (NAFBL) season. When West Hudson withdrew from the NAFBL at the end of the season, Brown moved to Paterson F.C. where he spent the next two seasons. At the end of the 1919–1920 season, Paterson withdrew from the league despite finishing in the top half of the standings each season. Brown then moved to Erie A.A. for the 1920–1921 NAFBL season. At the end of that season, Erie A.A. switched to the newly established American Soccer League (ASL) and changed its name to Harrison Soccer Club (S.C.).
