The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (formerly Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center), commonly called The Center, is a nonprofit organization serving the lesbian, gay, bisexuality, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) population of New York City and nearby communities. The center is located in the West Village at 208 13th Street (Manhattan), West 13th Street in Lower Manhattan, in a historic building which formerly housed an elementary school and the High School for Food Trades. History 19th century The building was designed in the Italianate architecture, Italianate style, popular between the 1840s and 1870s, and erected by the City of New York. It was built prior to the American Civil War, Civil War in 1861; however, the date of the building's construction is unconfirmed. It is rumored that Abraham Lincoln once visited the building. The West Village is a neighborhood in the western section of the larger Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. The traditional boundaries of the West Village are the Hudson River to the west, 14th Street (Manhattan), West 14th Street to the north, Greenwich Avenue to the east, and Christopher Street to the south. Other popular definitions have extended the southern boundary as far south as Houston Street, and some use Seventh Avenue (Manhattan), Seventh Avenue or Sixth Avenue (Manhattan), Avenue of the Americas as the eastern boundary.
