New Year's Gift or Villa de Speranza is a property located in Glenwood in Howard County, Maryland, United States. The property consists of a log cabin built in 1730, and a larger building with a cornerstone date of 1788. The L shaped house is built of brick construction with stucco covering. A two-story open porch supported by six columns flanks the front of the house. A two-story connection leads to a kitchen addition. The house was once owned by Dennis P. Gaither and later his son Daniel. In the late 1970s the property was subdivided to 9.9 acres. Cooksville, Maryland
Cooksville is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. As of 2016, the population was 631. The town was founded by Thomas Cook in 1802. The crossroads town was anchored by the Joshua Roberts Tavern, where General Lafayette visited in 1824. The inn was destroyed by fire, rebuilt, and demolished a second time. Thomas Cook exchanged his stake in Cooksville with Thomas Beale Dorsey for the 231-acre Round About Hills slave plantation. A Post Office opened on the 4th of July 1851, the same year Howard County was formed from a portion of Anne Arundel County. Roberts Inn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. On June 29, 1863, J. E. B. Stuart marched 5000 confederate soldiers through Cooksville en route to Westminster. Glenwood is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It is located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., therefore attracting commuters to those employment centers. The community features acres of open space and is districted to Bushy Park Elementary, Glenwood and Folly Quarter Middle, and Glenelg High schools. Union Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and Round About Hills was added in 2008. The population in 2020 was approximately 3,416. The area was settled in the early 18th century by the Ridgley and Warfield families forming large tobacco plantations: "Bushy Park", " Longwood", "Ellerslie" and others. In 1822, James B. Matthews purchased a 200-acre farm and stone home from Caleb Dorsey.
