New Yankee Workshop
''The New Yankee Workshop'' is an American half-hour woodworking television series produced by WGBH Boston, which aired on PBS. Created in 1989 by Russell Morash, the program was hosted by Norm Abram, a regular fixture on Morash's television series ''This Old House''. Overview ''The New Yankee Workshop'' featured the construction of woodworking projects, including workshop accessories, architectural details and furniture projects ranging from simple pieces to complex, high-quality reproductions of antique classic furniture. In the course of 21 seasons, approximately 235 projects were produced. In addition to furniture and cabinets, the show also focused on outdoor projects such as the building of a gazebo, shed, greenhouse, sailing boat, flag pole, mail box, cupola, and fences. Russell Morash
Russell Morash (born February 11, 1936) is an American television producer and television director, director. Morash's many television programs are produced through WGBH-TV, WGBH and airing on Public Broadcasting Service, PBS. Early life Morash is a native of Lexington, Massachusetts. Morash's father was a builder. Education In 1957, Morash graduated from the Boston University College of Fine Arts. Career Morash started his entertainment career as a cameraman for Boston public-television station WGBH-TV. In 1961, as a cameraman, Morash met Julia Child when she appeared on a WGBH program called ''I've Been Reading,'' while promoting her cookbook ''Mastering the Art of French Cooking.'' Woodworking is the skill of making items from wood, and includes cabinet making (cabinetry and furniture), wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning. History Along with stone, clay and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials. Norman L. Abram (born October 3, 1949) is an American carpenter, writer, and television host best known for his work on the PBS television programs ''This Old House'' and ''The New Yankee Workshop''. He is a master carpenter and has published several books and articles about the craft. Early life and education Abram was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and raised in Milford, Massachusetts, where he attended high school. His father was a carpenter, who taught his son many of his practical skills. Norm first worked on a client's site at the age of 9, helping his father install hardwood floors. He worked with his father during summer vacations in high school and college. Abram initially studied mechanical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he became a brother of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity.
