New Tredegar
New Tredegar ( cy, Tredegar Newydd) is a former mining town and community in the Rhymney Valley, Caerphilly county borough, Wales, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. New Tredegar is now home to 'The Winding House', a county museum which opened in 2008. It is controlled by CCBC Museums service and the Friends of the Winding House community group. The area is rich in the mining heritage of the South Wales mining industry. The area is supported by two primary schools; White Rose Primary school and Phillipstown Primary school. The area also contains a number of religious buildings including; Saint Dingat's Church and the Presbyterian Church of Wales. Along with other parts of Rhymney, New Tredegar had Welsh speakers in the community the Welsh-only monuments in the local cemetery testify to the strength of the language locally in the first quarter of the 20th century. Caerphilly (county Borough)
Caerphilly County Borough ( cy, Bwrdeistref Sirol Caerffili) is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. It is governed by Caerphilly County Borough Council. Its main and largest town is Caerphilly. Other towns in the county borough are Bedwas, Risca, Ystrad Mynach, Newbridge, Blackwood, Bargoed, New Tredegar and Rhymney. Geography Caerphilly County Borough is in southeast Wales and straddles the border between the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Gerald Jones
Gerald Jones (born 21 August 1970) is a Welsh Labour Party politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney since 2015 and has served as a Shadow Welsh Office minister. Political career The industrial decline of the 1980s and the 1984–85 Miner's strike led Jones, at the age of 14, to become active in the community struggle to support miners. He joined the Labour Party in 1988 and has served in a range of roles including Chairperson of New Tredegar Branch Labour Party and the Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney Constituency Labour Party. He began his career at Cardiff City joining them as an apprentice at the age of sixteen. He made his début on 24 February 1979 in a 1–0 victory over Leyton Orient at the age of seventeen. Four days later on 28 February he became the youngest player ever to be sent off playing for Cardiff when he was red carded during a 4–1 win over Blackburn Rovers. He became an important player for the club over the next few years especially during the 1982–83 season when he helped them to promotion. Timothy Rhys-Evans MBE FRWCMD (born c. 1972) is a Welsh conductor and best known as the founder and musical director of the choir Only Men Aloud! and Only Boys Aloud. He also formed the children's choir Only Kids Aloud in 2012. Rhys-Evans, from New Tredegar, was a vocal tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He has conducted several choirs, including The Black Mountain Male Chorus of Wales and Dunvant Male Choir. He founded Only Men Aloud! in 2000 (also known at Cantorion) and led them to victory in the ''Last Choir Standing'' competition in 2008. Darcy James Blake (born 13 December 1988) is a Welsh former professional footballer. During his career, he won 14 caps for Wales at international level, scoring once, and made more than 100 appearances in the Football League. New Tredegar RFC
New Tredegar Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union club team based in New Tredegar. Today, New Tredegar RFC plays in the Welsh Rugby Union, Division Four East League and is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons. At present the club runs two senior sides and a youth side. New Tredegar RFC started life in 1977 when it was decided that a senior XV team was required to permit the youth players, who had a team in since the early 1960s, to play locally at a higher level. By 1980 the club was fielding a second senior XV and after joining the Gwent District league in 1994 the team won their first piece of silverware, the Cyrus Davies cup. Gwent (county)
Gwent is a preserved county and former local government county in southeast Wales. A county of Gwent was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972; it was named after the ancient Kingdom of Gwent. The authority was a successor to both the administrative county of Monmouthshire (with minor boundary changes) and the county borough of Newport (both authorities which were legally part of England until the Act came into force although considered jointly with Wales for certain purposes).
