New Shoreham (UK Parliament Constituency)
New Shoreham, sometimes simply called Shoreham, was a parliamentary borough centred on the town of Shoreham-by-Sea in what is now West Sussex. It returned two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons of England from 1295 to 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and finally to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 until it was abolished by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, with effect from the 1885 general election. A modern constituency called Shoreham existed from 1974 to 1997. Boundaries, franchise and boundary changes New Shoreham is a part of Shoreham-by-Sea, located around its port. The borough, in 1800, had about 1,000 electors. The qualification for the vote before 1832, unusually for a borough, was the possession of a 40 shilling freehold which was the normal franchise for a county constituency. Lewes (UK Parliament Constituency)
Lewes is a constituency in East Sussex represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Maria Caulfield, a Conservative. Constituency profile The constituency is centred on the town of Lewes. However, the constituency also covers most of the Lewes district, including the coastal towns of Seaford and Newhaven, which are rural and semi-rural and all in outer parts of the London Commuter Belt, though with a high number of people who have retired from across the country. The constituency excludes Peacehaven and Telscombe which since 1997 have been in Brighton, Kemptown, and includes part of neighbouring Wealden District. Electoral Calculus categorises the constituency as "Centrist", indicating average levels of education and wealth and moderate support for Brexit. Rape Of Bramber
The Rape of Bramber (also known as Bramber Rape) is one of the rapes, the traditional sub-divisions unique to the historic county of Sussex in England. It is the smallest Sussex rape by area. Bramber is a former barony whose original seat was the castle of Bramber and its village, overlooking the river Adur. History Created by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century, the rape of Bramber was separated out of the neighbouring rapes of Arundel and Lewes and entrusted to one of his knights, William de Braose, 1st Lord of Bramber. It was inserted so William de Braose could defend the Adur estuary, and a re-allocation of land to existing rapal owners became necessary. In 1208, King John confiscated the Braose lands, taking them under royal control. In population terms, the smallest of the three rapes making up Sussex's western division, its population in 1801 was 19,203, rising to 22,777 in 1811 and 30,113 in 1831. At the time of its first publication in 1929 it caused a historiographical revolution in understanding the 18th century by challenging the Whig view that English politics had always been dominated by two parties.
