New Self-Government
Sjálvstýri (previously Sjálvstýrisflokkurin) (English: referred to interchangeably as ''Independence'', ''Self-Government'', or ''Home Rule'') is a liberal, autonomist political party on the Faroe Islands. It is currently led by the Mayor of Klaksvík, Jógvan Skorheim. Nýtt Sjálvstýri traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroes within the Kingdom of Denmark, but in 1998 it agreed, as part of a coalition deal with Tjóðveldi and Fólkaflokkurin, to support national independence for the Faroes. Today it supports obtaining independence through gradually increasing Faroese autonomy until the Faroe Islands becomes a de facto independent state. At the 2008 election to the Løgting, the party won 7.2% of the popular vote and 2 out of 33 seats. In early elections in 2011, the party's vote fell to 4.2% and it lost one seat. 2011 Faroese Parliamentary Election
Early general elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 29 October 2011. Faroese law states that new elections must be held at least once every four years; however, either the Prime Minister (''Løgmaður'') or a majority of the members of the Faroese Parliament (the ''Løgting'') may call an election before the end of this period. The previous elections having been held on 20 January 2008, the latest date on which the next elections could have been held was 19 January 2012. However, the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, announced on 27 September 2011 that elections would be held on 29 October 2011. He gave no particular reason for his decision. Jóannes Patursson
Jóannes Patursson (May 6, 1866 – August 2, 1946) was a Faroese nationalist leader and poet. He served as a member of the Parliament of Denmark and the Parliament of the Faroe Islands. Background Jóannes was born in 1866 as the eldest son of a wealthy farmer in Kirkjubøur. He was the great-grandson of the Faroese national hero Nólsoyar Páll (originally, Poul Poulsen Nolsøe). His brother Sverri Patursson was an important writer and his sister Susanna Helena Patursson the first feminist of the Faroe Islands. The so-called King's Farm of Kirkjubøur dates back to the 11th century, was the seat of the Faroese bishop until the 1536 Reformation and became — and still remains today — the greatest Royal Danish fief of the Faroese when King Christian III of Denmark confiscated the clerical properties. Louis Zachariasen
Louis Christian Oliver Zachariasen known as Louis Zachariasen (21 January 1890 in Kirkja, Fugloy – 30 August 1960) was a Faroe Islands, Faroese writer and politician for the New Self-Government party. He was the first deputy prime minister of the Faroe Islands after the islands received home rule in 1948. Zachariasen received a degree as a schoolteacher from the Faroese Teachers School in Tórshavn in 1911 and attended a folk high school in Denmark in 1915. In 1918 he received his ''examen artium'', and in 1924 he received a Master of Science in Engineering, master of science in engineering (Danish: cand.polyt.) from Polyteknisk Læreanstalt in Copenhagen. He moved back to the Faroe Islands, where he was employed by the Faroese Telephone Company (''Telefonverk Føroya Løgtings'') in 1925, and he served as the CEO of the company from 1936 to 1952. Helena Dam á Neystabø
Helena Dam á Neystabø (born 10 December 1955) is a Faroese Social Democratic politician. She has been served in the Lagting from 1990 to 2002, 2008 to 2011 and 2015 to 2019, has been a minister in three governments, and has been a member of the Tórshavn municipal council. Biography Neystabø grew up in Copenhagen as the daughter of seminar teacher Ása Hátún and Atli Dam, the Faroese Social Democratic Prime Minister. Her grandfather Peter Mohr Dam was also Prime Minister. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old, and she moved to the Faroe Islands with her mother when she was 13 years of age.
