New River Inn
The New River Inn is a historic site in Fort Lauderdale, Florida located at 231 Southwest 2nd Avenue. The New River Inn was constructed in 1905 by the area's first contractor Edwin T. King. It was commissioned by Nathan Philemon Bryan, a Jacksonville native and US senator. It was one of the first hotels built in the Fort Lauderdale area. Building The building was constructed of hollow concrete blocks and sand dredged from the nearby beach. This set the standard for modern construction in the region. It included sewer and irrigation systems along with running ice water and was lit with carbide lamps. History The 24-room building served as a hotel from 1905 to 1955. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Nathan Philemon Bryan
Nathan Philemon Bryan (April 23, 1872 – August 8, 1935) was a United States senator from Florida and a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Education and career Born on April 23, 1872, in Fort Mason, Orange County (now Lake County), Florida, Bryan attended the common schools. He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree in 1893 from Emory College and a Bachelor of Laws in 1895 from Washington and Lee University School of Law. He was admitted to the bar and entered private practice in Jacksonville, Florida from 1893 to 1911. He was Chairman of the Board of Control of the Florida State institutions of higher education from 1905 to 1909. The Museum of Discovery and Science is a museum focused on science located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. History EcoDiscovery Center Expansion In November 2011 the museum opened a 34,000 square foot, $25 million expansion, designed by Cambridge Seven Associates.
