New Popular Front
The New Popular Front (french: Nouveau Front populaire, , abbreviated as NFP, FP) and as the Ecological and Social Popular Front (french: link=no, Front populaire écologique et social, FPES)) is a broad left-wing politics, left-wing electoral alliance of political parties in France launched on 10 June 2024 in response to the snap 2024 French legislative election, 2024 legislative election. Popular Front
A popular front is "any coalition of working-class and middle-class parties", including liberal and social democratic ones, "united for the defense of democratic forms" against "a presumed Fascist assault". More generally, it is "a coalition especially of leftist political parties against a common opponent". The term was first used in the mid-1930s in Europe by communists concerned over the ascent of the ideology of Fascism in Italy and Germany which they sought to combat by coalescing with non-communist political groupings they had previously attacked as enemies. Temporarily successful popular front governments were formed in France, Spain, and Chile in 1936. The 2024 European Parliament elections in France were held on 9 June 2024, as part of the 2024 European Parliament election. Background The Borne government lost its majority in the 2022 French legislative election. Electoral system A bill creating a single national constituency was approved by the National Assembly in a vote on the first reading on 20 February 2018, and the Senate officially adopted the bill on 23 May 2018, which was promulgated on 25 June after its validation by the Constitutional Council. All French members of the European Parliament were elected through a closed list proportional representation system. Apportionment As a result of Brexit, 27 seats from the British delegation were distributed to other countries in January 2020 (those elected in 2019, but not yet seated took their seats).
