''New Plastic Ideas'' is the second studio album by the American post-hardcore band Unwound, released on March 21, 1994 by Kill Rock Stars. Background and recording The album was recorded in between from November 26–28 and December 13, 1993 at Avast! Studios in Seattle, Washington. As pointed out in The Vinyl Factory's review for the album, ''New Plastic Ideas'' is a somewhat a step away from the feedback-ridden sound of its predecessor ''Fake Train'' and focuses more on melody and odd time signatures, although the band has stated that this was unintentional. Release and packaging The album's title was once thought of a reference to the artist Piet Mondrian, however as explained by guitarist Justin Trosper, the name was simply made up on the spot. Unwound
Unwound is an American post-hardcore band. The band was formed in 1988 in Tumwater, Washington, Tumwater and Olympia, Washington by vocalist/guitartist Justin Trosper, bassist Vern Rumsey and drummer Brandt Sandeno, and was largely based in Olympia throughout the 1990s until the band's dissolution in 2002. Unwound's best known lineup included Trosper, Rumsey and longtime drummer Sara Lund, who replaced Sandeno in 1992. Often classified as noise rock in addition to post-hardcore, Unwound played a sharply dissonant and angular style that made use of unusual guitar tones, and garnered attention locally for their relentless touring schedules, favour towards "all ages" venues and their strong DIY ethic, DIY ethics. ''Select'' was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s. It was known for covering indie rock, but featured a wide array of music. Launched in July 1990, its first cover star was Prince. After EMAP Metro bought ''Select'', they revamped its image, and it became known for its coverage of Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Its 1993 "Yanks Go Home" edition, featuring The Auteurs, Denim, Saint Etienne, Pulp and Suede's Brett Anderson on the cover in front of a Union Flag, was an important impetus in defining the movement's opposition to American genres such as grunge. Later, John Harris stepped down as editor, and was replaced by former ''Mixmag'' editor Alexis Petridis. Under Petridis, the magazine's image moved back towards its coverage on an eclectic array of music, aiming to reach what Petridis described as "a wide range of music fans". Justin Trosper
Justin Trosper is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer, born in Olympia, Washington. He fronted the post-hardcore band Unwound from 1991 to 2002. He has also been a member of bands such as Replikants, The Young Ginns, and Worst Case Scenario. Most of his work has been released on the independent record label Kill Rock Stars. Trosper has been a record producer for several Olympia-area bands, primarily at Unwound's self-built recording studio, MagRecOne. He has worked on albums by artists such as Thrones ( Joe Preston), Young People, Shoplifting, Godzik Pink, Bangs, Long Hind Legs, Anna Oxygen, and The Magic Magicians. In the early 1990s, he self-published a punk/indie rock fanzine, "Joe Preston's Legs AKA Germ of Youth". He is also a friend of Bikini Kill's Tobi Vail and a graduate of The Evergreen State College. ''Closer'' is the second and final studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, it was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. Joy Division
Joy Division were an English rock band formed in Salford in 1976. The group consisted of vocalist Ian Curtis, guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a June 1976 Sex Pistols concert. While Joy Division's first recordings were heavily influenced by early punk, they soon developed a sparse sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement. The Cure are an English Rock music, rock band formed in 1978 in Crawley, Crawley, West Sussex. Michael Azerrad is an American author, music journalist, editor, and musician. A graduate of Columbia University, he has written for publications such as ''Spin'', ''Rolling Stone'', and ''The New York Times''.
