New Paris Covered Bridge
The Cuppett's Covered Bridge, which was built by Cuppett brothers William & Philip on September 14, 1882, is a historic covered bridge that is located in Napier Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. History and Features Privately owned by the Cuppett family from the day it was built, the bridge took just five months to build for a total cost of $780. John Wayde did the masonry work and Jeremiah Thompson completed the carpentry. Crossing Dunnings Creek, the bridge is a unique design with unusually low arches and low side walls which highlight the patented Burr Arch Truss system. Napier Township is a township in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,026 at the 2020 census. History The Heirline Covered Bridge and New Paris Covered Bridge were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Also listed are the Chestnut Ridge and Schellsburg Union Church and Cemetery and Bonnet's Tavern. Geography Napier Township is located in western Bedford County. Its western border abuts Somerset County. The boroughs of Schellsburg and New Paris are surrounded by the township but are not part of it. A small part of the borough of Manns Choice borders the southern edge of the township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.47%, is water. Bedford County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 47,577. The county seat is Bedford. History In 1750 Robert MacRay, a Scots-Irish immigrant, opened the first trading post in Raystown (which is now Bedford) on the land that is now Bedford County. Burr Truss
The Burr Arch Truss—or, simply, Burr Truss or Burr Arch—is a combination of an arch and a ''multiple kingpost'' truss design. It was invented in 1804 by Theodore Burr, patented on April 3, 1817, and used in bridges, usually covered bridges. Design The design principle behind the Burr arch truss is that the arch should be capable of bearing the entire load on the bridge while the truss keeps the bridge rigid. Even though the kingpost truss alone is capable of bearing a load, this was done because it is impossible to evenly balance a dynamic load crossing the bridge between the two parts. The opposite view is also held, based on computer models, that the truss performs the majority of the load bearing and the arch provides the stability. Either way, the combination of the arch and the truss provides a more stable bridge capable of supporting greater weight than either the arch or truss alone.
