New Paltz Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at New Paltz in Ulster County, New York. The district includes 147 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and eight contributing structures. It encompasses most of the portion of the village that was developed in the 19th century as it became the commercial center for a growing agricultural town. New Paltz is a village in Ulster County located in the U.S. state of New York. It is approximately north of New York City and south of Albany. The population was 7,324 at the 2020 census. New Paltz is located within the town of New Paltz. It is also home to the State University of New York at New Paltz, founded in 1828. Ulster County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. It is situated along the Hudson River. As of the 2020 census, the population was 181,851. The county seat is Kingston. The county is named after the Irish province of Ulster. History Founding and formation When part of the New Netherland colony, Dutch traders first called the area of present-day Ulster County "Esopus", a name borrowed for convenience from a locality on the opposite side of the Hudson. The local Lenape indigenous people called themselves Waranawanka, but soon came to be known to the Dutch as the "Esopus Indians" because they were encountered around the settlement known as Esopus. In 1652, Thomas Chambers, a freeholder from the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, purchased land at Esopus. He and several others actually settled and began farming by June, 1653. Elting Memorial Library
Elting Memorial Library is the public library that serves the residents of the village and town of New Paltz, New York. It is located at 93 Main Street (also NY 32 and 299) in the village's downtown area. In addition to a collection typical of most college town libraries, Elting Memorial Library houses the Haviland-Heidgerd Historical Collection, the non-circulating genealogical and historical research collection, with a focus on the history of the Town and Village of New Paltz. This collection features "house books" that detail the history of local homes and buildings, including historic structures.
