New Orleans Yacht Club
The New Orleans Yacht Club (NOYC) was founded in June 1949 and is dedicated to further the sport of yacht racing, marine safety and seamanship. The club is located at West End's Municipal Yacht Harbor on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and is a member of the Gulf Yachting Association since 1953. Since its founding, New Orleans Yacht Club has been home to many regional and national regattas as well as sailing champions. The club annually hosts or co-hosts over 30 regattas on the lake and its membership is actively involved in many regional and national regattas, including hosting Mardi Gras Race Week and the Bastille Day Regatta. The club holds one of the largest Wednesday Night Racing regatta series in the United States with on average 50 boats participating weekly throughout daylight saving time and has an active junior sailing program. Gulfsails
Gulfsails is the name of a blog, written by Troy Gilbert, that documented the effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans following that disaster. In the early aftermath of the hurricane and the 2005 levee failures in Greater New Orleans, it was one of the few reliable communications links between the city and the rest of the world. Gulfsails was originally created for New Orleans Yacht Club members, ten days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Operating off of a generator when power was lost and uploading via a landline phone and cell phone, the operator provided a continuous stream of reports of what was actually happening, and through photographs, text messaging and audio feeds gave the outside a chance to see the destruction firsthand before other media arrived. Optimist (dinghy)
The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by young people up to the age of 15. The Optimist is one of the two most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered. It is sailed in over 120 countries and it is one of only two sailboats as an International Class by World Sailing exclusively for sailors under 16. Viper 640
The Viper 640 is an American trailerable sailboat, that was designed by Brian Bennett for racing and first built in 1996. The Viper 640 is an accepted World Sailing class boat and the official one-design boat of the Gulf Yachting Association for its Capdevielle Series. Production The boat was originally built by Viper Boats in the United States and then in 2005 Rondar Raceboats of the United Kingdom was named the official class manufacturer. 400 examples had been completed by 2018. Design The Viper 640 was designed to combine the planing performance of a dinghy with the stability of a keelboat. The result is a small recreational planing keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with carbon fiber spars.
