New Orleans Storm
The New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers was an American soccer club that competed in the USISL from 1993 to 1999. Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, the club was renamed the New Orleans Storm in 1998. The team folded after the 1999 season. History On March 12, 1993, New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers owner Donnie Pate announced the creation of the team. The Riverboat Gamblers played their home games at Pan American Stadium, a 5,000 person stadium in the New Orleans City Park. Pate also announced that Ken White would coach the team with assistance from Mike Jeffries. Wearing a red, white and blue uniform, the Gamblers played their first regular season game on May 15, 1993 against the Birmingham Grasshoppers. The Gamblers spent their first season in the Southern Challenge Cup (Provisional), a group of four teams which played an eight-game schedule separate from the rest of the USISL. United Soccer League (USL), formerly known as United Soccer Leagues, is a soccer league in the United States and Canada. It organizes several men's and women's leagues, both professional and amateur. A-League Men (known as the Isuzu UTE A-League for sponsorship reasons) is the highest-level professional men's soccer league in Australia and New Zealand. Daryl Shore
Daryl Shore (born January 6, 1970 in Peekskill, New York) is an American former soccer player and current assistant coach of the Puerto Rico national team. Player Shore attended Birmingham-Southern College where started on the men's soccer team from 1989 to 1993. He was a two-time NAIA All American and graduated in 1993. He was inducted into the Birmingham-Southern College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. In 1994, Shore signed with the Birmingham Grasshoppers of the USISL. In 1994, he was the USISL's Mid-South Goalkeeper of the Year. In 1995, Shore moved to the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers where he was an assistant coach as well as player. In 1998, he became the head coach of the team, which was now playing in the USL A-League under the name the New Orleans Storm. Shore retired at the end of the season and became a full-time head coach with the expansion Lehigh Valley Steam. Gold Mine on Airline, formerly Shrine on Airline, is a 10,000-seat stadium in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. It is home field for the New Orleans Gold team in Major League Rugby. Known as Zephyr Field when built in 1997 as the home ballpark for the New Orleans Zephyrs (later New Orleans Baby Cakes), the stadium was renamed when the Minor League Baseball team's name changed from Zephyrs to Baby Cakes in 2017.
