New Orleans Film Festival
The New Orleans Film Festival is an annual film festival organized by the nonprofit organization New Orleans Film Society, a film society founded in 1989. The festival has been held since the society's inception. The festival takes place in mid-October. The festival, nicknamed "Cannes on the Mississippi", features national and international feature films and short films. The festival had one off-year when New Orleans suffered the effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. the festival had grown into an internationally respected annual event that attracts 20–25,000 people, 400+ filmmakers, and 240 films. It is one of the few film festivals that is Oscar-qualifying in all three Academy-accredited categories: Narrative Short, Documentary Short, and Animated Short—and it's been recognized by MovieMaker Magazine as one of the “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” every year since 2012 (one of only two festivals to receive that recognition for six straight years). ''Pier Kids'' is a 2019 American documentary film first shown at Outfest 2019. The film follows three young queer and transgender New Yorkers who frequent the Christopher Street Pier in Manhattan. The film was directed by Elegance Bratton. The film premiered on '' POV'' on PBS on August 2, 2021. Plot ''Pier Kids'' explores the lives of Black, homeless queer and trans youth who call the Christopher Street Pier in NYC their home. It was filmed over five years, taking place mainly in 2011, 2012, and three years later in 2016. The youth are interviewed over these years to show how time and experience changes. The movie shines a light on how queer people of color utilize spaces to create a chosen family, as well as highlights the police presence in a community that relies on sex work for their main form of income. A Tuba To Cuba
''A Tuba to Cuba'' is a 2018 American documentary film about the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The leader of New Orleans' famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band seeks to fulfill his late father's dream of retracing their musical roots to the shores of Cuba in search of the indigenous music that gave birth to New Orleans jazz. A Tuba to Cuba celebrates the triumph of the human spirit expressed through the universal language of music and challenges us to resolve to build bridges, not walls. The film was directed by T. G. Herrington and Danny Clinch and narrated by Ben Jaffe whose parents founded Preservation Hall in a segregated 1961 New Orleans. ''Straight Up'' is a 2019 independent film written, produced and directed by James Sweeney. Rodrigo Dorfman
Rodrigo Dorfman (born 1967 in Santiago, Chile) is a film director, producer, cinematographer, multimedia artist, film critic and commentator living in Durham, North Carolina. He has worked with P.O.V., HBO, Salma Hayek's Ventanazul and the BBC among others. Early life Dorfman was born in Santiago, Chile to Angélica Malinarich and playwright Ariel Dorfman, who was a cultural advisor to president Salvador Allende. Alexander Glustrom is an American film director and cinematographer. He has directed award winning films and shot projects for HBO, CNN, New York Times, A&E, Vice, Great Big Story, and Democracy Now. He currently works as a cinematographer on commercials, films and tv shows. Early life and education Glustrom was born in Midtown Atlanta. His grandparents Marian and John Glustrom were allies in the civil rights movement. He graduated high school from The Paideia School in Atlanta and college from Tulane University in New Orleans. At Tulane, he founded the student organization Tulane University Community Advancement Network (TUCAN) which brought students to The Boys and Girls Club to tutor and learn from the youth participants.
