The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT; es, Departamento de Transporte de Nuevo México) is a state government organization which oversees transportation in New Mexico, State of New Mexico in the southwestern United States. Monument is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Lea County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 206 as of the 2010 census. Monument has a post office with ZIP code 88265. State routes 8 and 322 intersect in the community. It was the first inhabited community in Lea County and was named after nearby Monument Spring. Lea County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, its population was 64,727. Its county seat is Lovington. It is both west and north of the Texas state line. Lea County comprises the Hobbs, NM micropolitan statistical area. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which are land and (0.07%) are covered by water. Lea County is located in the southeast corner of New Mexico and borders Texas to the south and east. The Permian Basin, wide and long, underlies Lea County and adjacent Eddy County, as well as a large portion of West Texas. It produces 500,000 barrels of crude a day, and this number was expected to double in 2019. The shale in this basin lies below the surface, below a salt bed and a groundwater aquifer. New Mexico State Road 8
State Road 8 (NM 8) is a primarily north–south state highway in the state of New Mexico. NM 8's southern terminus is at NM 176 west of Eunice, and the northern terminus is at U.S. Route 62 (US 62)/US 180 U.S. Route 180 is an east–west United States highway. Like many three-digit routes, US 180 no longer meets its "parent", US 80. US 80 was decommissioned west of Mesquite, Texas, and was replaced in Texas by Interstate 20 and Interstate 10 ... west of Hobbs. Route description State Road 8 begins at its junction with NM 176 west of Eunice. From there, the highway runs north traveling through largely rural land until reaching its northern terminus with US Routes 62 and 180 west of Hobbs. History NM 8 previously extended further south along NM 176, past the Eunice Airport and into Eunice.
