New Mexico State Road 21 (NM 21), is a state highway located entirely in Colfax County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The road starts in the center of the town of Cimarron at U.S. Route 64 (US 64) and runs southward then east to an intersection with unsigned I-25 Business (I-25 Bus.) and the western termini of US 56 and US 412 in Springer. Route description The road starts in the center of the town of Cimarron at the intersection of U.S. Route 64 (US 64) and Collision Avenue. It goes southward as South Collision Avenue. Leaving town limits it is called the Santa Fe Trail and passes by the well known Philmont Scout Ranch when it junctions with Cito Road and Conejo Road. On the road you can view the Tooth of Time and drive by the Villa Philmonte mansion and the Seton Memorial Library. The road continues to drive along Philmont property until it reaches Rayado. Cimarron is a Village (United States), village in Colfax County, New Mexico, Colfax County, New Mexico, United States, which sits on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Springer is a town in Colfax County, New Mexico, Colfax County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 1,047 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. History In 1877, William T Thornton, representing the Maxwell Land Grand and Railway Company commissioned Melvin Whitson Mills to "sell, locate, survey, map and plat, and lay out town site, no exceeding three hundred and twenty acres". Judge Mills selected a location along the Cimarron called Las Garzas and laid out the townsite and graded the streets. The Maxwell Land Grand and Railway Company conveyed the deed to Mills on 31 March 1880. The deed bequeathed the town Maxwell, but by 1883 according to the deed for the Mills Mansion, it was called Springer. Colfax County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,750. Its county seat is Raton. It is south from the Colorado state line. This county was named for Schuyler Colfax (18231885), seventeenth Vice President of the United States under U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant. Philmont Scout Ranch is a ranch located in Colfax County, New Mexico, near the village of Cimarron; it covers of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the east side of the Cimarron Range of the Rocky Mountains. Donated by oil baron Waite Phillips, the ranch is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America. It is a National High Adventure Base where crews of Scouts and Venturers take part in backpacking treks and other outdoor activities. By land area, it is one of the largest youth camps in the world. The Tooth of Time is a geological feature on the Philmont Scout Ranch located southwest of Cimarron, New Mexico, United States, and is one of Philmont's most popular sights. It is an igneous intrusion of dacite porphyry formed in the Paleogene Period of the Cenozoic Era some 22-40 million years ago. Santa Fe Trail The Tooth rises prominently from the valley floor, some below, creating a sheer vertical face unable to support substantial plant life. Both its pinkish-gray color and its unusual shape make it a particularly notable geological landmark. The Villa Philmonte is a large ranch home located outside of Cimarron, New Mexico, on Philmont Scout Ranch, owned by the Boy Scouts of America. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 as part of Villa Philmonte Historic District, which included two contributing buildings, two contributing structures, and two contributing sites. Rayado, New Mexico
Rayado or Reyado (older Ryado) was the first permanent settlement in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States and an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The name ''Rayado'' derives from the Spanish term for "streaked", perhaps in reference to the lot lines marked out by Lucien Maxwell. Some of the land in the townsite was purchased by Waite Phillips in the 1920s and Phillips later donated it to the Boy Scouts of America and it became part of the Philmont Scout Ranch.
