Clinton County is located in the U.S. state of Illinois. At the 2020 census, the population was 37,762. Its county seat is Carlyle. This was disputed with the establishment of a Post Office; the inhabitants were informed that another township in Illinois was already named Mechanicsburg. The town was renamed after the Mascouten tribe, and was officially designated Mascoutah in 1839. Mascoutah was considered a progressive town near the turn of the 20th century.
