The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property. The passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966 established the National Register and the process for adding properties to it. Of the more than one and a half million properties on the National Register, 95,000 are listed individually. The remainder are contributing resources within historic districts. New Market Historic District (New Market, Alabama)
The New Market Historic District is a historic district in New Market, Alabama. The town was founded in the 1820s as a trade center along the road between Huntsville and Winchester, Tennessee. The town incorporated in 1837, and had grown to around 500 residents by the 1850s. Although much of the town was destroyed in the Civil War, some antebellum structures survive, including Classical Revival houses built in 1854 and 1860, and the Whitman-Cobb House built circa 1861. After the war, the town rebuilt, and a dam was constructed across Mountain Fork Creek to power various mills; it was rebuilt in 1913. The New Market Presbyterian Church built their first building in 1852, which was destroyed in the war. Its second building, constructed in 1884, was destroyed in a tornado in 1885; the current Gothic Revival building was completed in 1888. The district encompasses the town located along what was originally the National Pike (now MD 144). The New Market–Linvale–Snydertown Historic District is a historic district located along NJ 31, Linvale, Snydertown, and Woodsville Roads in the communities of Linvale, formerly known as New Market, and Snydertown in the townships of East Amwell and West Amwell in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 12, 1998, for its significance in architecture, commerce, settlement, and community development. Battle Of New Market
The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men defeated the larger Army of the Shenandoah under Major General Franz Sigel, delaying the capture of Staunton by several weeks. The battle is primarily remembered today for being the only time in American history a school's student body was used as an organized combat unit. During the battle Confederate general John C. Breckinridge ordered cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), some of them child soldiers no older than 15, to join an attack on the Union lines.
