New London Raiders
The New London Raiders were a minor league baseball team based in New London, Connecticut that played in the Colonial League. Brothers Theodore Laviano and Dr. Gerald Laviano owned and operated the team. The Raiders were the first professional baseball team in southeastern Connecticut since the New London Planters had dropped out of the Eastern League in 1918. Road to the playoffs In their one season of existence in 1947, the Raiders finished the regular season in fourth place with a 50-67 record and 31 games behind regular season champion Waterbury Timers. That was enough to make the playoffs. They then beat #2 seed Poughkeepsie Giants 4 games to 3 in the first round of the playoffs but lost the championship series to #3 seed Stamford Bombers 4 games to 1. Colonial League (baseball)
The Colonial League was the name of two mid-level American minor baseball leagues. The first Colonial League was a Class C level league that existed from 1914 to 1915 as a minor league for the outlaw Federal League. The second Colonial League existed from 1947 through mid-July 1950. It was graded Class B, two levels below the major leagues, and featured teams based in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey History 1914 to 1915 The Colonial League began to operate as a Class C level league based in Southern New England in the 1914 season. In April, Alexander Bannwart drew notice by acquiring Big Jeff Pfeffer to manage the team in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The Los Angeles Angels are an American professional baseball team based in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Ken Strong
Elmer Kenneth Strong (April 21, 1906 – October 5, 1979) was an American football halfback and fullback who also played minor league baseball. Considered one of the greatest all-around players in the early decades of the game, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967 and was named to the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team. A native of West Haven, Connecticut, Strong played college baseball and football for the NYU Violets. In football, he led the country in scoring with 162 points in 1928, gained over 3,000 yards from scrimmage, and was a consensus first-team selection on the 1928 College Football All-America Team.
