New Haven Road Race
The New Haven Road Race is a 20 kilometer road race held in New Haven, Connecticut which was started in 1978. The race is held during the Labor Day weekend. History The first year the race was contested was in 1978, when nearly 1,200 runners showed up. The race director convinced the reigning marathon world champion, Bill Rodgers (runner), Bill Rodgers, to headline the race. The record number of competitors was in 2013, when over 7,000 people ran. As of 2021, there are 8 competitors who have run the race every year since its inauguration. Many years, the race has been host to the USATF 20k championships. During these years, elite athlete coordination is provided exclusively to domestic athletes, to incentivize American citizens to compete. Most years, the prize purse is around $40,000, with various incentives for breaking records. Money is paid out 10 deep. From the races inauguration to 1985, there was no presenting sponsor. Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States. Greg Meyer
Greg Meyer (born September 18, 1955) is an American long-distance runner. Meyer's winning time for the 1983 Boston Marathon race was 2:09.00. He was the last American to win the Boston Marathon until 2014, and the last person born in America to win the Chicago Marathon until 2017. He set ten American road racing records and two world records, and won the River Bank Run, in his home town of Grand Rapids, seven times. Robert Kempainen (born June 18, 1966, in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a retired two-time Olympian long-distance runner from the United States. He participated in the Athletics at the 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992 (Barcelona, Spain) and in Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 (Atlanta, United States) Olympics. He made his marathon debut in 1991 at the Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota, where he finished 2nd in 2:12:12. Lesley (Welch) Lehane (born March 12, 1963, in Lynn, MA) is an American retired long-distance runner. High school career Lehane graduated from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School class of 1981, winning back to back to back cross country individual state titles from her sophomore through senior years. Her best times on the track in high school include a 9:27 3000 meter run and a 34:48 10,000 meter run. College and professional career Lehane attended University of Virginia for two years, and subsequently transferred to Boston University. Her career highlights in cross country include winning both the NCAA and TAC National Championships in 1982, a 5th-place finish at the 1987 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, and a repeat as TAC National Championship winner in 1986. Don Janicki (born April 23, 1960) is an American long-distance runner. As a student at Mesa High School (Mesa, Arizona) in 1978, Janicki set the state high school record for the mile with a time of 4:09.95. The record would remain 35 years until Andy Trouard of Salpointe ran a 4:09.71. He later competed for the University of Arizona and earn All-American honors in 1980 and 1981 in cross country. During his 1982 track season, Janicki ran the 5,000 meters in 13:44.20 and the 10,000 meters in 28:27.87, putting him in the top 10 fastest University of Arizona runners in each event. In 1987, won the Holiday Bowl Marathon in San Diego, California. He drove away from the race with $4,000 in prize money and a new convertible. Anne Hird (née Sullivan, born April 19, 1959) is a retired American middle-distance and long-distance runner who was the U.S. national champion for the distances of 30 kilometers and 10 miles. She has won multiple national and international races. Professional career As a high schooler, Anne Sullivan won races and set records in the Rhode Island high schools. She would later be inducted into the state's interscholastic hall of fame (in 2006).
