New Hampshire Route 109 (abbreviated NH 109) is a north–south highway in Carroll County, New Hampshire. It runs southeast from Sandwich to the Maine border. The northern terminus of NH 109 is at New Hampshire Route 113 in the village of Center Sandwich in the Lakes Region. The eastern terminus is at the Maine state line in the town of Wakefield, where the road continues as Maine State Route 109, heading toward the town of Acton. NH 109 between Wolfeboro and Moultonborough is locally known as the Governor Wentworth Highway, with signage reading "The Governor John Wentworth Highway", in reference to Sir John Wentworth, 1st Baronet (1737–1820), who served as provincial governor from 1767 to 1775. State Route 109 (abbreviated SR 109) is a long state highway located in York County, Maine. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 1 and State Route 9 in Wells. Its northern terminus is at the New Hampshire border in Acton, where it connects to New Hampshire Route 109. It is a multi-state route with NH 109. NH 109 is signed as a north–south highway, but occupies a southeast-to-northwest alignment. Major towns and cities along the length of SR 109 include Wells and Sanford. Bounded on the southwest by Lake Winnipesaukee, Tuftonboro includes the villages of Tuftonboro Corner, Center Tuftonboro, Melvin Village and Mirror Lake. Sir John Wentworth, 1st Baronet
Sir John Wentworth, 1st Baronet (9 August 1737 – 8 April 1820) was the British colonial governor of New Hampshire at the time of the American Revolution. He was later also Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia. He is buried in the crypt of St. Paul's Church in Halifax. Early years Wentworth was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on August 9, 1737. His ancestry went back to some of the earliest settlers of the Province of New Hampshire, and he was a grandson of John Wentworth, who served as the province's lieutenant governor in the 1720s, a nephew to Governor Benning Wentworth, and a descendant of "Elder" William Wentworth.
