Jeanne Shaheen
Cynthia Jeanne Shaheen ( ; née Bowers, born January 28, 1947) is an American retired educator and politician serving as the senior United States senator from New Hampshire since 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, Shaheen served as the 78th governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003. She was the first woman elected governor of New Hampshire, the first woman elected to the Senate from New Hampshire, and the first woman elected as both a governor and a U.S. senator. After serving two terms in the New Hampshire Senate, Shaheen was elected governor in 1996 and reelected in 1998 and 2000. In 2002, she unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate against Republican nominee John E. Sununu. She served as director of the Harvard Institute of Politics before resigning to run for the U.S. Senate again in the 2008 election, defeating Sununu in a rematch. The governor of New Hampshire is the head of government of New Hampshire. The governor is elected during the biennial state general election in November of even-numbered years. New Hampshire is one of only two states, along with bordering Vermont, to hold gubernatorial elections every two years as opposed to every four. Currently, the state's 82nd governor is Republican Chris Sununu, who has served since January 5, 2017. In New Hampshire, the governor has no term limit of any kind. Only two governors have served more than three terms since the 18th century (when the term was for only one year), John Lynch, who won a fourth two-year term on November 2, 2010, and Chris Sununu, who won a fourth two-year term on November 8, 2022. Jim Rubens
Jim Rubens is an American politician from the state of New Hampshire. A member of the Republican Party, Rubens served in the New Hampshire Senate for two terms. Biography Rubens was born in Brooklyn. He attended Dartmouth College. He worked as a developer and investor. Identifying himself as a fiscal conservative, Rubens formed a new political party in 1993, called the New Majority, an offshoot of the Independence Party of New York. Rubens ran for the New Hampshire Senate in 1994, challenging Ralph Hough in the Republican Party primary election. Rubens defeated Hough, and won in the general election. In 1995 he was sworn in. Rubens was reelected in 1996. Rather than run for reelection to the New Hampshire Senate in 1998, he ran for Governor of New Hampshire in the 1998 election, but lost. Emile Dorilas Beaulieu Jr. (April 2, 1931 – December 30, 2016) was an American politician who served two nonconsecutive terms as the Mayor of Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1982 until 1983 and again from 1988 until 1989. Biography Early and personal life Beaulieu was born in Nashua on April 2, 1931, the son of Emile Dorilas Beaulieu, Sr. and Albina Claveau Beaulieu. His parents, who struggled to financially support a large family, sent him to live at St. Joseph's Orphanage twice during his childhood. He left school after sixth grade to work. One of Beaulieu's earliest jobs was at McElwain Shoes, where he met his first wife, the former Pauline Leclerc. The couple had six children during their marriage, which lasted until Pauline Beaulieu's death in 1994. 1998 United States Gubernatorial Elections
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 1998, in 36 states and two territories. Going into the election 24 of the seats were held by Republicans, 11 by Democrats, and one by an Independent. The elections changed the national balance of power by the loss of one Republican and the gain of one Independent, although it shifted in nine states. Democrats gained open seats in California and Iowa and defeated incumbents Fob James of Alabama and David Beasley of South Carolina, while Republicans won open seats in Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, and Nevada and the Reform Party won an open Republican governorship in Minnesota. By the end of the election, 23 seats were held by Republicans, 11 by Democrats, one by the Reform Party, and one by an Independent.
