New Hampshire Department Of Environmental Services
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) is a state agency of the U.S. state of New Hampshire, headquartered in Concord. The department works to "sustain a high quality of life for all citizens by protecting and restoring the environment and public health" in the state. The department is authorized under New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated (NH RSA) Chapter 21-O. The department consists of three divisions: Air Resources Division, Water Division, and Waste Management Division. The Water Division includes the New Hampshire Water Council and the New Hampshire Wetlands Council. Additionally, the New Hampshire Geological Survey is administratively attached to the department. In January 2022, a bill was introduced in the New Hampshire House of Representatives that proposed changing the name of the agency to New Hampshire Department of Environmental Protection. Concord () is the capital city of the U.S. state of New Hampshire and the seat of Merrimack County. As of the 2020 census the population was 43,976, making it the third largest city in New Hampshire behind Manchester and Nashua. The General Court of New Hampshire is the bicameral state legislature of the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The lower house is the New Hampshire House of Representatives with 400 members. The upper house is the New Hampshire Senate with 24 members. This ratio of 1 Senate seat for every 16.67 House seats makes New Hampshire's ratio of upper house to lower house seats the largest in the country. During the 2018–2020 session, the New Hampshire General Court was controlled by Democrats, with a 14–10 majority in the Senate and a 230–156–1 majority in the House, with 13 vacant seats at the end of the session. New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is the National Public Radio member network serving the state of New Hampshire. NHPR is based in Concord and operates eight transmitters and six translators covering nearly the whole state, as well as portions of Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine. The network airs NPR news and talk shows on weekdays and a mix of cultural and music programs on weekends. NHPR's news staff of 21 is one of the largest in the state and is the only statewide source of radio news. History and listenership NHPR's original station, WEVO, signed on from Concord on August 4, 1981. It was originally known as "Granite State Public Radio," after New Hampshire's state nickname.
