Poughkeepsie (), officially the Town of Poughkeepsie, is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 45,471. The name is derived from the native term ''Uppuqui'' () meaning "lodge-covered", plus ''ipis'' meaning "little water", plus ''ing'' meaning "place", all of which translates to "the reed-covered lodge by the little water place", or ''Uppuqui-ipis-ing''. This later evolved into ''Apokeepsing'', then into ''Poughkeepsing'', and finally ''Poughkeepsie''. The area includes a large IBM campus noted for its ongoing development and manufacturing of IBM mainframes. New York State Route 113 (NY 113) is an east–west state highway located southeast of the city of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County, New York, in the United States. The western terminus of the route is at an intersection with U.S. Route 9 (US 9) in the town of Poughkeepsie. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with NY 376 in the Poughkeepsie hamlet of Red Oaks Mill. NY 113 is known as Spackenkill Road for the majority of its length. Spackenkill Road was initially maintained by Dutchess County. Jurisdiction of the highway was transferred to the state of New York in 1980, at which time it was designated NY 113. Oakwood Friends School
Oakwood Friends School is a college preparatory school located at 22 Spackenkill Road in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. With roots going back to Nine Partners Boarding School, founded in 1796, it is the oldest co-educational boarding and day school in New York state. Nine Partners School In 1794, the New York Yearly Meeting appointed a committee of twenty-five to establish a school; their first meeting was on January 13, 1795. Poughkeepsie Day School
Poughkeepsie Day School is an independent, progressive, coeducational school in the mid-Hudson Valley serving students from a broad region of New York and Connecticut from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. History Founded in 1934, it was originally located at Hooker and South Grand Avenues in the city of Poughkeepsie, where it began with 35 students and three faculty members. The school outgrew that facility, and in 1963 it moved to custom built premises on the Vassar College campus at 39 New Hackensack Road, Poughkeepsie. Our Lady of Lourdes High School is an American private Roman Catholic school, located in Poughkeepsie, New York, in Dutchess County. The school received accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in May 2004. In 2009, the school separated itself from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. History The school was founded in April 1958 by Francis Cardinal Spellman, who purchased the former Poughkeepsie High School building and grounds from the Poughkeepsie Board of Education. The school was given its name in honor of the centenary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes in France. The new school opened in September 1958 with a faculty of four brothers and four sisters, and an athletic coach. The Vassar College Observatory is an astronomical observatory of the private Vassar College, located near the eastern edge of the Poughkeepsie, New York college's campus. Finished in 1865, it was the first building on the college's campus, older even than the Main Building, with which it shares the status of National Historic Landmark. The observatory's significance is due to its association with Maria Mitchell, the first widely known woman astronomer in the United States.
