New England Golden Gloves
As a Franchise of the National Golden Gloves, the New England Golden Gloves is the annual amateur boxing competition for the New England States. It has been held every year since 1945 at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts. Competitors over the years include boxing greats, such as; Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, and Micky Ward. The competitions typically take place in January through February, with the winners heading to the National Golden Gloves in May. History In 1946 Robert Edward Seavey Sr. won the Golden Gloves at the age of 17, registered under the name of his older brother Albert. He won the Championship title again in 1947. Matt Godfrey
Matt Godfrey (born January 16, 1981) is a Wampanoag former professional boxer who competed from 2004 to 2012. He challenged for the WBO cruiserweight title in 2010. Amateur career Godfrey, who is a close friend of Jason Estrada since his childhood, had an outstanding amateur career prior to turning professional. He was the 2000 U.S. National Amateur Champion at Middleweight, 2002 National Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, and 2004 U.S. National Amateur Heavyweight Champion. Daniel Thomas O'Connor (born March 30, 1985) is an American professional Boxing, boxer. Ralph Francis Lally (February 12, 1948 – December 18, 2011) was an American Golden Gloves Champion from Lowell, Massachusetts. Lally fought over 75 Golden Gloves bouts throughout the United States and Canada, winning 67 knockouts. He was selected to fight in the Olympics, but was drafted into the Vietnam War. Amateur Boxing
Amateur boxing is a variant of boxing practiced at the collegiate level, at the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games, as well as many associations. Amateur boxing bouts are short in duration, comprising three rounds of three minutes in men, and four rounds of two minutes in women, each with a one-minute interval between rounds. Men's senior bouts changed in format from four two-minute rounds to three three-minute rounds on January 1, 2009. This type of competition prizes point-scoring blows, based on number of clean punches landed, rather than physical power. Marvin Hagler
Marvelous Marvin Hagler (born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler; May 23, 1954 – March 13, 2021) was an American professional boxer and film actor. He competed in boxing from 1973 to 1987 and reigned as the undisputed champion of the middleweight division from 1980 to 1987, making twelve successful title defenses, all but one by knockout. Ray Charles Leonard (born May 17, 1956), best known as "Sugar" Ray Leonard, is an American former professional boxer, motivational speaker, and occasional actor.
